Wondering if anybody can help with the problem of Sat-nav not operating correctly.
When I switch on the car, I can hear a whirring noise that usually accompanies the screen popping up but nothing happens.
Similarly, when I switch off I can hear the whirring noise again.
I am guessing that the drive has either disengaged itself or is it something more ominous?
By the way, I don't use the system because it is so bad but if it's fitted then, in my book, it should operate correctly.
Any help would be appreciated.

Mine failed too. There's a parts kit with new gears that's remarkably inexpensive. Took my dealer about an hour to install (that part was remarkably expensive).
Astonmartinbits has the parts if you're up for a DIY: http://www.astonmartinbits.com/models/4-DB9/parts/...

Slightly confused. Why would your Satnav screen pop up when you switch the car on? Mine doesn't, you have to go through the process of turning it on using the controls. But maybe mine is different from yours.
That's the factory setting - i.e. they all should. Not sure why yours is different or how to change it however. No doubt it's just a setting within the menu.
This is exactly how mine USED to work too. Now its just stuck down. I'm sure the gear has either cracked as you can now just pop it up or down with zero effort with your finger. Does anyone know how to remove the panel safely? I've seen some videos in other threads that look like a nightmare but by the looks of it the panel over the satnav just pops off. If its only £10 for a new gear pack and 35 mins work then its got to be worth fixing yourself?

Mine will come back up when the car is switched on ONLY if I have left the satnav up when switching the car off. If the satnav is down when the car is switched off, it does not come back up on starting the car. Have to press the knob to get it up then;
Yup. Mine too. Leaving it open and turning car off means it automatically opens next time I switch the car on.MY 2010 Vantage.

Some of it is explained here by Lewis. Follow the links to his threads and if you tackle it can you put up an explanation and maybe some pics please? http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

OK - I undertook this fix this weekend and it only took me about 1hr 30 mins (with tea break in the middle). As per request, I've put together a full set of start to finish set of instructions mainly just copying and pasting usefull stuff previously posted on different threads. I've put it all in a word document as it has a few pictures and links to videos etc. Any Idea of how I can upload this to this site?

Sat Nav “pop up” gear fix.
All I’ve done here is compile the different bits of good work other users have put together in one place. These are the links I’ve used at the time of writing.

You’ll need a variety of different sizes of Phillips and Pozidriv screwdrivers and if possible a small long nose pliers along with around 1-2 hours of your time. Most importantly you’ll need the new gears available here :- http://www.astonmartinbits.com/models/4-DB9/parts/...
The broken cog and the replacement!
Step 1 – Make sure the car is off and the key is out the ignition. Sat Nav cover should be down.
Step 2a (Vantage) – Use hands to manually lift up the front of the nav cover. Pull side slides out so satnav screen comes away from the cover and drop display down. It will then look like this. (if in doubt see end of video link above)
Step 2b (DB9 – although I cant confirm this ) - Use hands to manually lift up the front of the nav cover. Lift up about two inches and slide your other hand under. You should feel two metal prongs. Slide these away from each other (i.e. toward each door), pulling gently and they should 'snap' out the back of the cover. It will then look like this
Step 3 - Remove the SatNav dash cover.
The video in the link above shows you how to strip the whole centre console but the important bit here is the sat nav cover which can be removed WITHOUT removing the rest of the car! The video is a bit brutal so I tried another method using some tape which I tucked in behind the corner in order to PULL it off. See first pic above. You can also just pull it off using your fingers - Lower the nav cover again to around two inches open. Now reach over the top of the nav cover and slide your hand in behind it and under the ski slope (palm facing the window). Bring your other hand over and hold onto something for leverage. Now move the hand thats under the ski slop to one rear corner and pull up...hard / firm. There are four clips that hold the slope in place. One in each extreme corner. The first corner will feel very solid and difficult to lift up but don't worry, you will not break it, the metal clip is just snug in the dash. You can now slide your hands behind the whole unit popping each corner away. BE CAREFULL not to pull too far away from dash as there are cables that need to be disconnected.
Step 4 – Fully disconnect from the dashboard.
lift up gently, reach under and unclip the multi plug for the start button (and other buttons if you have an auto). These are just black clip in multi plugs like you get in the back of a stereo. The air vents are attached to the ski slope and come off with it therefore nothing to do on these. Place the cover somewhere safe.
Step 5 – Removing the Sat Nav unit.
There are 4 screws in each corner. Remove these using the correct sized Phillips screwdriver being VERY carefull not to loose any of your screws into the dashboard. Again be careful when lifting the satnav unit that you don’t pull it too far. There are 2 connectors that will need to be unplugged. Unit will look like this below.
Step 6 - Follow the Aston Martin service bulletin instructions here to replace cogs.

This video is very usefull in explaining how to reconnect the “E” clip with the long nose pliers for those that have not done it before.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWrI6ycRKt4
Step 7 – Follow these instructions in reverse to put the whole thing back together. When you come to put the ski slope cover back on try to engage the bottom clips first as the air vents are easier to aligne this way.
Hope this helps a little more!
FINNISH !
