how much would a OEM one cost for a Caymen ?

You'll have to call around and get quotes for the AOS and its replacement labor. I've had 2 done over the years in my 02 Boxster but in the USA and not for years and even if I remembered what it cost this info would have little or no bearing on what you would pay.

If it needs doing you should not delay. You should avoid driving the car, running the engine any more than *absolutely* necessary. The AOS can advance to a failure mode that can route too much oil vapor to the intake and under severe cases can hydrolock the engine. If this happens it can ruin an otherwise fine engine that needs only a $100 (est.) part and a few hours labor to replace.

thanks Rockester, not sure if mine has failed TBH, just covering some bases. The car goes into the garage on Monday for some checking over to ensure its running as it should and to investigate the smoke on cold start up it has. maybe I;m just be paranoid but would like a professional to get a look

The part is cheap - about £20 from memory and then 1 or 2 hours labour.

Have you had the DME map reprogrammed to the latest version that addresses smoking on start-up specifically for MY09 987.2s??

I'm not sure, am best to contact an OPC service, give my reg/chassis number to check ?

Have just spoken to my local OPC to see if the DME software is up to date. I gave them the chassis number but they said they will need plug the car into their system. Surely this should show up on their system, as the car has full OPC history. They also want to charge 1 1/2 hours labour to do the check, am i being ripped off? to plug the car into the OBD point and check cannot take that long, can it ??

The OPC service records are not shared among the various OPC's nor are they shared with PCGB or Porsche.

The only way I know would be to query the DME for this info using the diagnostic computer. 1.5 hours is a bit high I think. 'course to offer a possible reason the *dealer* charges IMHO an excessive amount of labor for this service that requires diagnostic computer time is there is a hefty monthly fee on top of the heft initial price just to keep the thing alive. Also, many dealers do not have any real surplus of these machines as they are expensive so the one (and often there is only one) is in constant use and by charging for this time the dealer cuts down on the number of customers who are to put it kindly a nuisance. Well, that may not be the best word but it is all I can come up with.

Also, the query is not a connect, query, done operation. The diagnostics computer software design requires a full scan be done which takes time to complete. While the tech does not have to hover over the tool he does have to monitor its progress. The data may not be interpreted by the tech either. It might have to be sent -- via some proprietary internet connection -- to the factory and then the info of whether the DME software is up to date or not and what is the latest version comes back from the factory.

Hi again!

I dont think your Indy would have the up to date SW For the DME; it was only released from version 26.00 of the piwis SW OR the Gen 2 Tester (tough book version) which Indies don't have as far as I know?

Your OPC need to read

Technical Information Service 1 74/09 EN 1001 "Blue smoke" from engine after engine start (74/09)

Check with your Indy; if they have tester SW earlier than Vers. 26.00 they won't be able to help.

Hi Pope, the car was serviced this May, would the OPC not have updated the DME at that time? Worth contacting the that OPC direct? would they not keep a copy of the service receipt? as i do not have when i bough the car.

The DME would only be updated if a complaint was made by the customer - not updated as a matter of course.

If you PM me your VIN I can check the last Analysis Log for the DME SW on my system if you like?
