I've got a 2006 Golf 170 with DPF and DSG.

I've had DSG before but never DPF (just had this Golf 7 months).

When the car thinks a regen is required does it make the auto gearbox holds revs?

I have noticed that sometimes it doesn't seem to change gear, at first I thought the DSG gearbox was faulty as it wasn't changing up as usual. It is very obvious, as when doing 30mph the car sounds very noisy, and you'd naturally want another gear to quieten things down, but the 'problem' went away.

So, it true, is an automatic better to have with a DPF equipped car, as the ECU can have some say over the rpm to put more heat into the DPF?

I had a 170 Passat with DSG and it definitely adjusted the low speed shift points when it was in regen mode. It was very noticeable and if I remember right it would hold it in 3rd at around 30mph instead of 4th or even 5th.

It didn't originally do it but started to after a service when I assume it had a software update.

Yes!, It's the 3rd at 30+ which makes it very noticeable as you say.

My DSG won't select 5th at 30mph.

Which engine/DSG combo have you got? My current Golf will sit in 5th at 30mph but it's the 7 speed and it's a petrol engine.

The gearbox adapts to your driving style as well. Tickle it around and it will tend to select a higher gear for your speed. Mash the gas everywhere and it will stay in a lower gear longer. Not as extreme as sport mode but it's noticeable.

It's 6-spd connected to a diesel BKD engine. biggrin Gets a mixture of smooth, sedate town driving and clumsy holigan mashing about.

I tried this.

My 170 will shift into 5 at 30, at 29 it goes into 4th. If left in D, it will choose 4th for 30.

It ignored my attempt to put it in 6th at 30.

Mine won't accept 5th until 35mph (in manual or D). At 30mph it is either 3rd or 4th (terrain dependant).
