I have always wanted an original Audi Quattro but can't afford one. I have been browsing Audi Coupe GT's and they seem to be good value for money. I just wanted to know if they are any good, what to look for etc etc. Does anyone on here own one or has in the past who can give me an insight into them.
They made a Quattro version of the GT as well. That was with the 2.2 5 cylinder engine not the turbo one with the blistered wheel arches. My father had two of these new, he always wanted the pukka "Quattro" but never quite got there. Nice enough and they were reliable but the interiors were bland and boring even by the standards of 20 years ago. I once got the quattro stranded on a hump of snow with all four wheels spinning.
I've had 2. Loved them both. Sound glorious, quite peppy, average on fuel. Interior is germanic from that era and handling is poor in non quattro form- seemed to get mass understeer.
One of the best drives I've ever had was Bristol to London at 5 am in the GT with the sun coming up.
In summary I could pretend it was the full fat UR turbo. Looked nearly the same and sounded the same.

Lovely things, not that capable in the scheme of things nowadays but they were quite pleasant, try to get a 5 cylinder one, for the rather lovely noise and watch for rust.
i think there are some other classic Audis, the 100/200/V8 range, available in many confusing variations, along with the 80 and 90, the later available with the 5 cyl engine.
Audi 200 turbo quatro manual with a little work done by Dialynx woudl eb my choice, they did rally these back in the day

I had one in the early eighties, my first new car. I'd seen the Quattro but couldn't afford one back then so I had to make do with no four wheel drive, no turbo, no wheel arch bulges and a carburettor!
I only kept it a year but I do recall a starting problem with spitting back through the carb that was fixed under warranty; not sure if that is common.
You'd probably do better to find an owners club to seek out more up to date information now that the GT is getting on a bit. That might also be a source of a good example.

Yeah but they seem to be a bit more scarce and i'm not overly bothered about it being a Quattro, the bit that I am more interested in is it being a 5 cylinder. I know old cars will need work i'm just worried about it turning into a money pit with parts prices/availability etc.

Hmm, wrong wheels and a challenging colour but looks decent.

That was going to be my next question, am I right in thinking later cars those that don't have quad headlights were galvanized? It is going to be a daily driver but I do limited miles about 100 miles a week during winter. i think there are some other classic Audis, the 100/200/V8 range, available in many confusing variations, along with the 80 and 90, the later available with the 5 cyl engine.

I ran F999 USD (2.2 GT) from March '95 'till Sept '98.
I really loved it. This was back in the day when Audis were actually over-engineered, quite basic but very reliable. It was easy to work on too.
Went quite well for the time, was easily capable of seeing off some other late 80's hatchbacks and coupes. 0-60 8.5 seconds or so, and onwards to 120+mph.
The back seats accommodate two (consenting) adults as well.

These were the weapon of choice when I passed my test back in the day and could be picked up for next to nothing. I had a few including a couple of the quattro derivatives but the fwd 5 cyl 2.2s or early 1.9s were the ones to go for as they always seemed faster than the quattros. From what I remember, they were pretty bomb proof considering the abuse we threw at them, all had the hydraulic lifter tick on start up but should quieten down as oil pressure builds. Still love 'em, had my 20v quat for 19 years now!...

galvanization will only last so long against a wet carpet or mud trapped, they have repairs done and all sorts can happen over that time. They are/were amazingly rust resistant but make sure you still check it thoroughly.
Just found a 2.2 Quattro in the PH classifieds. Interesting history too.

Not sure but don't rely on Galvanization as being a guarantee of anything on a nearly 30 year old car, my 944 was galvanized and younger but still needed a fair bit of welding and mine wasn't as bad by any stretch as some are.

Thanks for the tips, do you know any hidden areas that they can rust? I know they have a tendency to rust around the bottom of the windscreen panel. Minor bodywork problems I'm not to concerned about as I have done my own bodywork on my past classics, more of a concern is the mechanical's and what to look for. galvanization will only last so long against a wet carpet or mud trapped, they have repairs done and all sorts can happen over that time. Wasn't the Coupe GT the 1.9 four cylinder one and the five cylinder 2.2 called something else?
My father had two of them, both brand new. A GT first and then a quattro (not ur quattro) that was five cylinder. They were a really cool car in their day, and still look good now.
If I recall correctly they had a tilting metal sunroof, but if you wanted it open you had to pull a pin from each side and bodily lift the panel out. There was a slot in the roof of the boot for it.
I spotted one a year or two ago at an Audi dealer identical to my father's car, I took a photo. I can't upload an image at the mo though.

They even did a GT with a 1.8 injected 4 pot. I would imagine this might feel rather asthmatic by today's standards, and would aim for a bigger engine such as the 2.2i with 136 bhp IIRC, and much better torque.
Many years ago I had an Audi 80 with the 1.8 4 pot, i'm looking for a a 5 cylinder coupe though. Do you know if there is much difference between the 1.9, 2.0 and 2.2 5 pots? I'm not that bothered about out right performance but want that 5 cylinder warble

That's very nice but should of swapped the wheels before taking the pics as they are gross. Way way out of my budget though. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...
