Who's your favourite actor?
Discussion
For me, this is quite a difficult one to answer. Lots of actors that I like/enjoy their films but so many actors (Bruce Willis, Jason Statham) for example are so typecast or maybe they just choose to do films where they're playing similar characters.
Others are likeable and come across as nice people in interviews but are they great actors? I don't know! Would like to go for a beer with Pierce Brosnan, Rowan Atkinson, Eric Bana, Hugh Jackman and Hugh Grant for example! Hugh Grant seems to have had a remarkably successful career despite that embarassing incident on Sunset Boulevard all those years ago. And if anything, it helped his career and made him cooler!
So who are my favourites?
Sean Connery. He's good in all the films I've seen him in but apart from Bond tends to play similar types of characters.
Of the younger actors? I myself am in my 30s, so the actors that I consider "young" like Tom Cruise for example, aren't actually!
Robert Downey Jr. Based on his more recent performances. Sherlock Holmes, Iron Man, Due Date (I'll conveniently forget Tropic Thunder because I hated the film but he was probably the best thing in it)! Not really that familiar with his earlier work.
Brad Pitt. I actually think he's a pretty good actor and thought his character was really cool on Oceans Eleven but comes across as a bit of a d*** off screen!
Johnny Depp. Has played some very quirky characters very well but I'm not actually sure if I've seen him "play it straight".
My favourite actor is probably Anthony Hopkins though for his versatility. He can play a nice old man, a hero (Zorro) and a psychopath all convincingly yet remain likeable.
I haven't mentioned any actresses, as I'm ashamed to say, I find it difficult to distinguish between acting ability and sex appeal when it comes to actresses but to try and avoid being sexist, I'll say Jennifer Aniston. Yes, she can be a bit typecast but has done other genres outside romantic comedy (Derailed for example) and is still attractive in her 40s.

I'd agree with Anthony Hopkins, I think he's brilliant in everything. If he's in it, I'll watch it.
Brad Pitt is another actor that I think is really good. The curious case of Benjamin Button is a case in point.
I like George Clooney as well = think I'm turning gay!
I have to say, much as I dislike the little turd, Tom Cruise is actually pretty good at his job!
Actresses are far harder as, like you, if I fancy them, they are, by default, fine actresses!

I actually think he comes off as a nice guy in real life (apart from the weird scientology thing) but don't really rate him as an actor, as he pretty much always plays the same character. I think Rich Hall hit the nail on the head in one of his stand-up shows! I think his success is mostly down to being in the right place at the right time and having the right face!

I'd have honestly said Phillip Seymour Hoffman a week ago. He had incredible versatility and could steal a movie with just a cameo (see Charlie Wilson's War, Almost Famous etc...). I would watch a movie on the strength of him being in it. Gene Hackman would be up there too as well as Gambon and Kingsley.
Meryl Streep.
Honestly, she's the most versatile actor I can think of.
Drama, comedy, even action (The River Wild) are styles she can take in her stride, whilst avoiding simply being 'Meryl Streep' as so many 'film stars' do.
I'm also a big fan of Cate Blanchett, but she's a little too 'Cate' all the time to match up to Streep's quality, imo.
I like Willem Dafoe in films, but he's usually a similar character.
Christopher Waltz is great in IG and Django, but again, a bit samey.
I used to HATE Matthew Mcgonnagal (or whatever his name is), he was the only reason I needed to avoid a film for years.
However he was unrecognisable in "Reign of Fire" and is carving out a reputation as someone who can actually act!
