This will only mean something to those of us who have an interest in old bikes (or who are just old smile)...

Ernie Lyons, who was responsible for the Triumph Grand Prix, on which he won the 1948 Manx GP, has died at the age of 99.

When they built the GP, the only source of alloy heads and barrels barrels was the stationary engines used to power generator sets that were used on WW2 bombers, hence the parallel exhaust ports and square barrels with bosses for the shrouds that partially enclosed the engine.
