I'm looking for some led deck lights to put in to some outdoors decking, so they need to be IP rated. I want to hard wire them to the outside light fitting, so that they come on when the outside light is switched on.

Ideally, I am looking for led lights where I can select a different colour if I want to. Low power obviously.

Most of the lights I have seen come with either a transformer built in to a 3 pin plug or a transformer with a cable going to a 3 pin plug (both of which cannot be left outside!)

Any suggestions please?

I have a set of white colour lights from Wickes in our decking, they come with a standard 13a plug and a IP rated transformer.
I have this in a IP wall socket where I can switch it on and off with the transformer is hidden under the deck boards.

I initially bought the color changing version but with similar requirements to you I found it wouldn't work for me as it has a transformer plug and a non IP switch to change colour.

Take your lighting feed into this and only use it for the deck lights.

Wise box, cut off the plug and hard wire them. Costly but the best and neatest way.

The Wickes colour changing lights need the non IP switch to be accessible as this turns them on/off and to cycle through the colours/modes, They don't come on with the mains supply,
The solid colour ones do come on with the supply, as the don't have the colour changing switch and associated electronics.

Bit of a thread revival as i'm looking to do the same as teh OP and have run into the same issue.

I'm replacing some decking, and would like to add some lights. I already have a 240V feed from the house that powers an outdoor lamp, the switch for which is next to teh decking.
I'd like to change this switch to a double, one for the existing lamp and one for the new decking lights. Trouble is, all the decking lights seem to come with a 3-pin plug that has to be plugged in to the mains, rather than be wired in to a separate switch.

There are loads of 12V led lights, including lots intended for vehicles.
You could get a 12V led driver of whatever wattage you care for, stick it in a plastic box and wire it to your switch.

Beware some led drivers are 'constant current' not constant voltage.

If you want disco-shagging-colour-changing lights, tons of those on ebay to run from 12V controlled by a little IR remote.

I solved this issue by putting the transformer and plug inside an IP rated box designed for outside use. Then ran the feed in to the box from the outside supply.

The box hides neatly underneath the decking close to the house which also provides extra water protection.

I used these with LED GU10s, no transformer required: https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/TLW35GU.html
