Anyone got a Yamaha YSP-4300 sound bar?
Discussion
Not an owner but I've heard one at a mates. It was good, for a soundbar, certainly several times better than the TV sound that's for sure. Movies and games were pretty good. I own a decent 5.1 system myself so I'm quite critical, I'll rate it as acceptable for what it is, unlike other soundbars I've heard previously.
One thing its utterly s
t for is music, my old squeezebox boom was better for music, personally for a simple system without loads of speakers I'd actually go for a small stereo system over a soundbar and use it for TV as well. In fact that's exactly what I did with some Linn in wall speakers and a small sub in my kitchen/dining room

I think but cannot be sure that I saw a reference on here to someone who had a Yamaha YSP-4300 soundbar.
If so, or indeed anyone else, any comments or thoughts? I have read the reviews but here in Dubai land, no one has one to actually demo.
Cheers
I've got one and it's good. I've got a 5.1 system in another room, and a reasonably high end stereo (so I'm fairly critical), and I've been amazed at the way the Yamaha gives an impression of surround sound. It's quite bulky, and as the previous poster says, it's completely useless for music, but I would definitely recommend it for TV if you haven't got the space for a 5.1 system. I also like the wireless subwoofer (probably commonplace now, but felt wonderful not to have cables everywhere when I first got the system two years ago).
Thanks all for the replies. I was not able to demo it properly (large open store) but it did sound ok. It seems to lack midrange/mid so quite high and then lows with the subwoofer.
The audio (via an iPOD) was disappointing considering the price of it.
But I still bought it! They also gave the wall bracket and it came with the Yamaha iPOD wifi dongle thing - some reviews said that this was optional.
Will install tonight and report back.
I listened to others (JBL, Harman, Bose) but not impressed for the money asked

Bit late now, but the one everyone is raving about is the new Naim Muso.
Selling as a loss leader to try and get people into the Naim brand.
Out in September.
Not surround but more a hi end sound bar/all in one music system.
I however have never liked the Naim sound, but think it might suit TV viewing.

Thanks - just looked and not really what I was after in terms of a wide soundbar to sit under the TV (65in Panasonic).
Set it up last night. I am sure they Yamaha engineers did not figure on the wierd layout of our place (essentially, no side walls!) but I could pick up some effects - it may be using the wall behind me (literally - the couch is against it - to create a 'surround' effect.
It makes a massive difference to the audio from the TV though (it was good but not great) and for movies, I am impressed. You can definitely hear positioning at the FL, C and FR and sub is nice and punchy without that silly boominess/rumble that seems to be common (some may like that - I don't).
It is a lot clearer than what I heard in the shop and my only criticism is that the voices seem to be lower/most distant (if that makes sense) than the other audio in a movie.
Grabbed whatever was around after I did the auto set up (the cardboard stand for the microphone is a nice touch).
FROZEN - sounds excellent and the vocals of the 'Let It Go/Kill Me Now' (depending on if you have kids) was sharp and clear.
PEARL HARBOUR - mock me if you will but I think this is a great movie. The sound effects are brilliant! When the planes are howling overhead, you can definitely hear positioning.
Radio - nice to have
Setup - a doddle
iPOD/iPAD connection - the wireless dongle is great. As others have said, the audio is average for music but does a decent enough job for sometting in the background.
The same room has a Yamaha ISX-800 (http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/desktop-audio/isx-800_b/?mode=model) which, to me, is brilliant for the money and the iPOD music will be played through that.
The soundbar is built like a tank and you can see where the money appears to have gone to justify the price.
I have not yet played around with the setup in great details (lots of onscreen menus) but will report back on what I find.

Yep I have found that, not quite figured out how to resolve that, perhaps the univolume setting to even it out a bit?Overall I am pretty happy with it, to my ears it is more than good enough for music, we use it for that quite a lot.
You need to get to know what the settings do and set it manually to get them to sing properly.
And don't use the corner setting, even if it is in the corner.
I think on all YSPs I have had I have had the 'centre channel around 6db higher than the 'left and right' channels.
I have never got it to get the sound right using the auto calibration, always way off.

I picked up a 3300 a couple of weeks ago, but other than a very quick test I haven't set it up and used it in anger yet. I'm in the process of building a false chimney breast with my 50" plasma recessed and the YSP will be recessed in a cut out below the screen. I've had 5.1 before, but didn't want the numerous speakers and wires this time. I'm looking forward to fiishing my little project and getting the soundbar set up and working.

Great minds and all that! That is exactly what I ended up doing and made a huge difference.I have never got it to get the sound right using the auto calibration, always way off.
The Incredibles sounded great but the voices were 'lost' and if you increased the volume to compensate, the special effects were so loud that it caused the cats to bolt from the lounge.
Overall, I am very happy.
Have you got a sub on it?
Even a smaller Rel Strata, that you can pick up for £100, makes a huge difference, not just to bass but the soundstage, it makes the thing really snap in.
One of the small BK subs would do as well.
I can't underestimate how much better the soundbars are with a sub attached.

Yep, has the sub. Had to argue with the store, who argued with the distributor, that it came with a sub hence why their demo sounded so crap.
Eventually was sent out to then (as I was not buying based on hearing half a system).
Ooohhhhh....was the response when it was properly connected.
If I was yamaha, I would be majorly ticked off.

Just to update this thread for future reference I am really enjoying the soundbar, I'm not an audiophile by any means but it has proved great for TV and film use, ok you can't hear it coming from behind you very well but I think it's worth the trade off. Everyone who has heard it has been impressed and connecting it up to a Sonos bridge has made it great for several parties, the sound is more than adequate for a 60sqm room.
The only problem is I now want something similar for the bedroom!

I find that frequently the subwoofer drops connection with the soundbar - anyone else notice this? Is there anything you can do about it?
Also, when trying to fix a problem with netflix audio, I managed to lose the soundbar menu on the display of the TV - I can't get it back without seeing the display.
If anyone can be bothered, would be really handy to list the menu commands so that I could get the display back!

I keep meaning to have a look at this when I get home for you! If you still need it I will try and get this weekend.
