Help - selling private number plate whilst on retention
Discussion
Evening
I have a buyer for my private registration which has been off the car about 6 months on retention. I have the retention document.
I am seriously confused about how to go about this , and would be very grateful if anyone could shed some light on the matter.
My retention document has the following options;
1. Assigning this vehicle registration. The grantee must fill this in and this gives the option to transfer to another vehicle. No other options.
2. Change nominee details. Just first name and surname can be completed here.
3. Extending retention period - self explanatory.
4. Grantees change of address
5. Refund of assignment fee.
6.signature of grantee.
Ideally I just want to transfer the rights to the registration over to the buyer, but is this possible to do without transferring to the buyers vehicle?
I think I may be over complicating this but if anyone in the know, knows I would be very grateful.
Thanks

The previous poster is incorrect. Making someone a nominee does NOT give them any rights as the DVLA makes specifically clear. The retention document will still be in the name of the grantee but with the nominee name added. So the answer to your specific question is no. (See below). DVLA said:
A right of retention allows you to assign the number to someone else’s vehicle but you must tell us in advance who that person (the nominee) is, so that we can include their name on your V778 Retention Document.
Important: Having a nominee places you under no obligation to assign the number to their vehicle. Only you, the grantee, can decide whose vehicle is to receive the number. The nominee has no rights to the number under the retention arrangements.
You will find the same caveat on the V778 retention document itself.Important: Having a nominee places you under no obligation to assign the number to their vehicle. Only you, the grantee, can decide whose vehicle is to receive the number. The nominee has no rights to the number under the retention arrangements.
However there is a workaround but it entails risks for both parties. If the prospective buyer is not ready to put it on their vehicle yet you could always make them the nominee and, when you get the amended V778 back, sign the grantee's declaration while leaving it undated and the VRM box blank before handing over the V778. The nominee would have to complete the process within the remaining time period of the validity of the document. Only by an actual assignment to their already registered vehicle would they acquire any rights though.

This is EXACTLY what i have done last week with a plate I sold... also telling them that if they don't assign it, they are responsible for any future retention costs (via me), otherwise I'll let it lapse :| No difference. The online service is merely an alternative to doing it by post.

The recipient still needs the V778 reference number to proceed with the assignment to his/her vehicle.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but the DVLA Registration phone line is closed and am a bit confused with the info on the website...
I currently have a buyer for a registration I currently have on retention , but they are asking if the price includes fees... I paid the DVLA £80 when I retained it and at the time I thought the fella on the phone told me there were no further fees to pay when assigning it... Is this also the case if signing the reg over to someone else or transfering the cert to them?
Thanks

The short answer is yes it's the same. It makes no difference who the assignor is.
That said, there is one caveat. It depends on when the original retention was made.
If it was on or after 1 May 1993 then these words will appear on the front of the V778.
THE ASSIGNMENT FEE HAS ALREADY BEEN PAID - i.e. the £80, no additional fee required.
If it was before 1 May 1993, the £80 fee is payable.
Confirmation of this is in the Registered Vehicles section of the Guidance Notes.
On the reverse side of the V778.

I’ve just purchased a plate that was on retention and it appears there are no fees to pay.
I now have a V750 Certificate which under “purchaser” has the sellers name but my address... and under Nominee has my name.
The bike I’m putting it on has been delayed but
I’m hoping the above gives me everything I need?
The online tool says it’s free to assign this to a vehicle and that the act of assigning it is what constitutes the act of transferring ownership itself?
