I loved The Raid, but thought The Raid 2 was quite dull.
The concept of the first film was simple - men fighting their way up and down a tower block. It was filmed well, the fighting was brutal and well choreographed, and the approx 90 minute length was just right. A belting movie.
The Raid 2 however turned that story into a "full length" movie, with it lasting around 130 minutes. The storyline was fairly basic and in this case, it was to its detriment. One fight scene towards the end was dragging on so long I had to skip it as I was getting bored of the two men battering each other in the same room.
A friend told me that "If I loved the first one, then the second is even better!", but to me at least, it was overly long and a bit boring. The first movie was just a simple lump of fighting with minimal storyline to get in the way, which is perfect for a film like that, but with the introduction of a full storyline and character development in the second movie, they just couldn't quite pull it off IMO.

Reminds me of Alien and Aliens which gets similar flack.
I agree with the criticisms of the second one, vanilla and action scenes too long but I still appreciate it for what it is.
Personally rehashing the same concept wouldn't work. Instead of being trapped in a building how about an airport? Oh wait a minute they did that with Die Hard 2 and look what happened to that series.

Mmmm - I watched this recently.
Not a bad 'action' film, but really? Comparable to "Saving Private Ryan"?
Not half as visceral (in the form shown on Film 4 at least) and the fight scenes, I'm sorry to say, were like extended performances from Strictly!
Talk about over choreographed... I think there was less in Chicago!
The concept was good, but essentially the same as Dredd, which took away any novelty.
I guess I'm not their key demographic, but I enjoyed Dredd much more and thought this was, mostly, a bit of forgettable nonsense...

I do think the first raid is a bit over hyped and I also enjoyed Dredd a lot more. Raid 2 is a far better film than the first though IMHO. Not a bad 'action' film, but really? Comparable to "Saving Private Ryan"?

Dredd isnt the same sort of film . considering Megacity is basically a mass of blocks what else would a Dredd film be based in? If you know 2000ad people can live their whole lives within a block and never leave it. It's a city within a city.
Tiring reading the 'Dredd copied raid'.
But if you read the thread it has been pointed out already that was not the case. However the two movies are very clearly linked together and always will be unfortunately. So whenever one of the other is mentioned someone will always be along to compare them.Tiring reading the 'Dredd copied raid'.
Obviously as most people know by now 'The Raid' was based on the Dredd screenplay called "Peachtrees" that was bounced around Hollywood looking for a studio. The Director of the Raid read this screenplay, loved it. so wrote his own 'version' and got it made. Then Dredd finally got a studio to fund it and was made from the same original screenplay he had copied.
The Director of the Raid then actually admitted where his story came from when stories started about Dredd copying him (trapped, gangs, big city block etc).
I enjoyed the Raid (1st one) for all it's nuts fights etc but for me Dredd is the far superior movie.
