Hi,

I moved into a house and the kitchen didn't have a dishwasher plumbed in only a washing machine, there is spare cold water feed so will use that problem is with the waste outlet. Currently the washing machine waste pipe is plumbed into the sink waste pipe, the sink waste pipe seems to have to outlets coming into it the sink over flow and the washing machine.

There is no spare waste outlet for me to connect the dishwasher waste to so looked online and I see these Y splitter, so make one of the waste outlets into 2 this is a link to a metal one / Ive seen plastic to > http://www.stevensonplumbing.co.uk/brass-y-loose-n... . Would a setup like this be ok, would it be able to cope with both the washer and dishwasher running at same time and pumping out there waste at the same time ?

thanks

That item you linked to is for splitting a single cold water outlet into two so if you only have one cold water feed you can run both the washing machine and dishwasher off that.

I'm sure there would be a part or method for plumbing two wastes into one. As for running both machines at the same time, it might cope, it may not, but then what is the likelihood of both machines draining out at exactly the same time?

Best bet is probably just to change the trap on the sink to one with two appliance inlets e.g. http://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-tw477-dual-sink...

I'd prefer two outlets, but it will work ok.

Thanks, I already have that type of waste pipe with the two inlets one used for washing machine the other sink overflow. Will try it with the Y splitter and see how it goes.

That's what I've already got, but one of the waste inlets used for washing machine and the other seems to be from the sink overflow, suppose I could block off the overflow.

cheers

You may need to consider flow rates. If the waste pipe has a gentle fall or follows a convoluted path or is a particurlarly long run you might find that if both the wash machine and dishwasher pump out at the same time the waste plumbing might not be able to cope with the volume of water.

Don't ask me how I know this I just do... frown

I've always wondered why the feeds into the drain pipe don't connect below the U bend therefore blocking any smells from the waste water and stopping or at least reducing the annoying water gurgling sounds?

I guess it would be more fiddly to connect further down the drain pipe?

When I moved in to my previous house the owners had very kindly disconnected the dishwasher outflow pipe by taking the whole sink connection off before the U-bend and taking it with them.

You know the rest.

Fortunately I had a spare (I'm that kind of guy) and knew where it was in the 200 or so packed boxes (yes, I'm that kind of guy) so spent a happy first evening on moving in day underneath the kitchen sink.

Nice.
