Hello fellow skiers,

Long story short, ive had 1/3 of my outer meniscus tissue removed from my right knee so come ski time, it blows up something chronic (as in fluid around the knee) and unless i can massage/go in a swimming pool, means i have to stop skiing early or my technique just goes to st, which frustrates me even more etc.

So ive been looking at the various contraptions that help skiers in rehab and to me, the 'best' options are the ski mojo's or getting a CTI knee brace.

Has anyone had any experience with these devices?

Im otherwise in good health, train for skiing when it comes up, have the knee bindings for early release if it feels as if your going to go over/tweek your acl or mcl etc but just the knee is letting me down (but is good for all other sports).

Thanks

James

In good PH style, I have not used either you mention, however being an ex rugby player both knees have MCL/ACL/patella buggeration and no cartilage

So when falling over on a snow board, I wear Mueller HG80's on both knees

stabilised my knees and now I fall over less

I've had a dislocated kneecap and thus permanently stretched ligaments, on top of general buggeration from football, cricket and rugby.

Went on a skiing holiday for the first time in 20 years last year. I'm glad to say I can vouch for the exact Mueller HG80 supports above.

Inside them is a double-hinged aluminium insert on both sides of the knee. There's a jelly oval keeping the kneecap in place.

They are really comfortable, and don't move around considering skiing puts pressure on them all the time. I gave them a hoist-up a centimetre or so every couple of hours to make sure they were in place.

I actually felt highly unsupported without them. If you pull them tight it even take s some strain of your thighs in keeping the right position.

The best moment of the holiday was actually when I fell. I was giving my mate a 'pull' with a ski pole on a flat spot as he had a snowboard. He thought it was a good idea, to give a big pull back on me to thrust himself forward...

...I went over backward and because the 'impact' was low as I fell the ski did not detach, and folded underneath me - I felt pressure on my knee and thought it was gone...

It was actually the pressure of the support kicking in, and I very thankfully got up with no pain at all.

Highly recommended. If you can get them from the US from Amazon, they are about half the UK price, if you don't mind waiting 3 weeks or so.

Thought id update this thread;
So for xmas i asked the missus to get me the Mueller HG80 but forgot to mention which one so she got me the spring version;

Was better than the neoprene bjj sleeve i had but id have to stop off piste skiing after half a day. Knee swelled up slightly but not as bad.

I should have asked her to get me the hinged one but tbh, the lack of wraparound velcro support at the top meant the sleeve would slip down slightly whilst skiing.

So i purchased the Shock Doctor 875 knee brace

The difference was night and day to the HG80 and allowed me to ski fairly hard all day. Didnt like being scrunched up on the chair lift so had to dangle the leg though.

I ended up skiing with the SD on the dodgy knee (right) and wore the HG80 on the left - the HG80 felt like it was more compressive and you could feel it and you didnt notice the SD on the right but the SD outperformed it (for me) on the off-piste.

I think if i was just piste bashing the hg80 would be fine though. So ill relegate the HG80 to being general gym use (when its cold in there), american football and left knee support (dont really need it for skiing but...)

Only issue, bar the bunching behind the knee was that the hole doesnt line up with my knee cap like its meant to but didnt notice it whilst skiing
