About 18 months ago I dug out some of my old lego from my mums attic.
Apologies for no pictures but I'm away with work so have really slow Internet and photobucket is blocked anyway.

I found set 8479, which is a technic truck. 8480, which is the space shuttle. 8880, which is a supercar. 6991, a space monorail.
Also a load more smaller sets.
I'm not sure what any of them are worth but I made them up to check it was all there and will be boxing them in the loft for the future.

I would like more though but it's all so expensive, so is it possible to make a little extra through lego. From buying sets at car boots and selling whole or splitting down onto bricklink? Or using bricklink to put together whole sets or some other way, what's best?
I'd like to get models to put in the loft but if I can bring the price down or make a little to make prices more paletable then that would be good.

Also, the Ferrari F40 model, cheapest I can see is £69.99 with John Lewis, anyone know any better prices?

Many thanks!!

There are plenty people running micro businesses selling Lego.

Have a look on Bricklink.com smile

In a word, Yes. However it takes a fair bit of time, effort and patience.

A few options:
Try to buy complete sets at a reduced price in a sale or Ebay.
Buy job lots and then missing bits from Bricklink then sell complete sets on Ebay.
Buy job lots and sell the individual bits on Bricklink.

Forget buying individual pieces on bricklink to make a set. The prices and postage are a killer here.

The F40 and other exclusive sets are only on sale at Lego.com and a couple of other places. Very difficult to find in a sale. If you know you are going to build and display for a while then second hand is a good option.

In addition to the above, try and buy a set to sell down the line, so maybe get two (one for you, one to invest) and sell (BNIB) a few years after it's been discontinued, it's what I'd do if I had the funds. Big stuff mainly, like the big Star Wars sets or theme stuff, ghostbusters, Dr Who, the F40. All these may go up in value (but it's a gamble). I really wish I'd had the money to buy 2 x SSDs, 2 x Death Stars etc, etc.

Cheers for the tips. I imagine most of the stuff on ebay will be watched by many legendary fenatics so car boots etc will probably be the best for potential gains.

Buying a couple is a good idea, then comes the problem of if does go up how long do you wait before you sell haha!

Getting a range of stock would be the starting bigger cost but it's doable. Hopefully will get home before the years out to start!

The problem is knowing when to sell as you become attached to it!
Ive collected star wars and other interesting sets for a few years, buying from car boots and supermarket offers etc.
Boot sales etc are hard work for buying now as everybody else is at it, more people use ebay for selling these days.

You can make plenty out of LEGO but its more of a long term investment rather than short term. Retired sets are the best for significant returns. Completing incomplete sets can also see a profit but you need to do your homework first to see what is needed to finish the sets. I always buy in duplicate one for me the other to sell.

I'm hoping it's possible to make money out of it, I have about 20 sets in the corner of the spare room. I'm planning on keeping them until retirement and then selling them. If they aren't worth anything I'll enjoy building them.

Well if you need any bits then I may have them when I get set up haha.

I think the hard part is going to be finding enough second hand lego and then sorting it so I may go out and buy a good few sets and part them out (once I've done a bit of digging to know which ones are worth more in bits)

Most sets with mini figures can be parted out & sold individually to make money

I see a lot of star wars sets split up on ebay, buy a set and sell the figures separately etc.
Dont know if people actually make much money doing it but there are quite a lot on ebay.

A friend of a friend buys minifigures in bulk then sells individually. Reckons he makes enough for a couple of decent holidays abroad a year.
He said it does take a bit to learn which ones are worth what, so when he sees a picture of a job lot he can very quickly come up with their rough value

I make a bit, but not by any of the usual methods mentioned here. I design, make instructions, part-out, pack and package models that Lego wont touch - for various reasons (specifically military so far). It takes a colossal amount of work and I definitely don't do it for the money. - it works out less than a £ an hour! But I meet interesting people, bring a bit of pleasure and get the occasional compliment.

http://facebook.com/toptablemodels... if you want to see more.

Scroll down a bit on the FB page and you'll find a competition you can enter to win one of these guys and a £25 voucher. - Would be nice If a PHer won him - and you could add the £25 to the usual PH discount on a Eurofighter!!

Theres definitely money to be made if you know where to look, when to look and are clever with your timing. The super-expensive stuff has already plateaued in my opinion, and unless you are lucky enough to find one at a car-boot or similar for a low price, theres little to no money to be made.
Is the above bold bit still true of the expensive sets still available or just relating to those which have already been retired?

IMO, obviously, but im talking about the ones already retired. If you can find a random one cheaply, then great - but at the prices some of them already command I dont think theres far for them to go... unless perhaps you are playing the very long game... Plus sitting on sets worth £5k+ would give me shivers in the case of an economic downturn etc. I like buying sets at the €3-500 price point and selling at the €600-1000 area. With the right sets that can happen quite quickly, its still a very handsome profit, and should it all go tits up you've not bet the mortgage on it hehe
Cool, that's what I thought, just buy two of the larger sets when I get one for myself, then a couple of years after the set's retired sell one. smile

Is it possible - yes. But you have to be careful what you buy and when you buy.

You also have to consider whether you are making long or short term investments.

The market gets more and more fickle the more people get involved.

I have been buying/selling the odd set here and there for the past 18months - with the big and expensive sets I only ever buy sets I like, as at the end of the day I still then have some nice Lego to build.

Thus far ive averaged about 50% profit per set, netting about 1700euro profit on an approx 2k of purchases.

As a recent example I bought the 10221 Super Star Destroyer in 2014 and built it! Purchase price was 360euro and I sold it this week for 700 eur!

Ive got 4x Tumblers waiting for me in the UK to pick up in May. Paid the equivalent of 190euro for each of them, and as long as prices dont tumble in the mean time I should be able to shift them for around 400eur a piece.

Xmas 2014 I bought Frozen themed Ellas Castles for 35euro a piece here in NL and sold them on UK eBay for about 150euro a pop.

Theres definitely money to be made if you know where to look, when to look and are clever with your timing. The super-expensive stuff has already plateaued in my opinion, and unless you are lucky enough to find one at a car-boot or similar for a low price, theres little to no money to be made.
Do you see the tumbler rising in value that much?
There are some left near me but it does not strike me as a popular set.

Any opinions on the porsche and excavator group buy? Do you recon they'll go up much? Interested in getting one of each anyway!

I'm going to start looking around when I get back, been away since new year. I think I'll get a load of used lego and a good chunk of new sets. Break it all down and see how it all goes with selling.

I've added my name to the group buy for the Porsche, but that's because I want one for myself. But I imagine it could be very valuable about 5 years after retirement (I know that's a long way off obviously). But could be worth getting a couple. I guess it all depends if you want to make quick gains or not?
