Mazda 6 MPS - Sleeper saloon
Discussion
Hi guys,
after looking at so many different cars i decided that i couldn't resist the Mazda 6 MPS. It comes with the 2.3 turbo engine used in the 3 MPS and CX-7 and produces around 260bhp, although some seem to be higher from the factory.
Having only owned the car a week, this may just be the perfect Q car. Its discreet that only people in the know give me a nod when they drive past. I've had alot of mates ask "what engine is it? is it a diesel?"
I found my example in Bristol and travelled there from Kent. It had the lowest miles and better service history than others i'd seen and had the mods that i wanted to do already done. Had an good drive back from Bristol and realised that the car really doesn't feel that fast, it's not until you look at the speedo and you're well into illegal speeds that you realise just how quick it is.
It's perfect for me, space for 5 with ease, massive boot, brilliant Bose sound system as standard.
Mine has the resonator removed in the exhaust, Corksport stage 2 Intake kit and turbo inlet pipe, Street unit TMIC and i've just fitted a forge bypass valve to replace the plastic one which is prone to leaking.
60k Miles from new, VVT actuator etc replaced and 4 new tyres as well.
So here she is.

Only things I noticed was that the clutch was quite "notchy" on pick up and pulling away. There is a guide to doing that on the mazda forums so will give that a crack.
Mpg on first tank around 25mpg, can do better as i've been enjoying the car and still learning how it drives etc.
Comments welcome!

Has to be said, if I saw that on the road, I would assume a brisk overtake was possible with some muttered commentary about pensioners and slippers. Presumably 260 is the starting point, if you let the tuning hooligans loose on it you end up with something comical?
The looks don't do a lot for me, but presumably that is part of the fun!

Even the standard 6 is one of the better handling large family hatches out there (better than a mondeo imho).
Shame there is no hatch version of the MPS though.
If it is a keeper then it might be worth rust proofing inside the rear arches and sills. A 2006 model is just about when Mazda started doing something about rust but I would not trust they have sealed it properly. You might be lucky though.

I think the looks are part of the fun, most people especially 'the boy racers'. Yes there are a few in the states running silly power! The looks don't do a lot for me, but presumably that is part of the fun!
I have noticed a very small amount of rust creeping through the rear arches. So minimal at the moment but will no doubt become worse in years to come.
Nice sleepers , pick your mods and tuner wisely though. There has been 4-5 go pop this year at various states of tune.
Here is my thread when i had my 3 .Its still running with the same tune aswel.

Yes i have heard that tuning is tricky on these. To go much further than mine currently is would need uprated fuel pump internals at least. But im happy with how the car performs at the moment..nice amount of shove.
Still getting used to how it drives as ive driven diesels for the past 3 years.
Im sure its had the resonator removed as it does have a nice rumble at idle. May look into removing the 2nd cat but concerned it may make it a bit drony.
