Show is on as I write this. It's a countdown of top 50 movies of the 90s.
Now I realise this show is on channel 5, and presented by patsy kensit so loses almost all credibility...
It's a decade of some of the great movies of all time (in my opinion) BUT shawshank redemption at number 38!?, goodfellas at 36!.... REALLY?
Wtf are they on!? Have they gone and asked a bunch of spotty 15 year olds?

What was number 1?

I never really get the excessive zeal for the Shawshank Redemption - It's OK with some good performances, but not really the 'best film ever' as it's often billed.

It's a fairly predictable prison movie - the author of "Is it Just Me or is Everything st?" has a good theory and one I've always believed to play a part - It plays on every straight man's fear that if he goes to prison that he'll be constantly raped by violent homosexuals - which few if any other mainstream films actually go into detail on (This may be why Scum is viewed so positively too - I must admit it deflected me from any thoughts of a life of crime as a teenager!).

It wouldn't make my top 20.

I don't recall Goodfellas - One gangster film is much like another, really...

These shows are on the whole, quite appalling, and pander very much to the hear and now.

I remember a show with a similar format at the tail end of 1999, when they did the top 50 singing artists of the century.

Number 1 was Robbie Williams! Yes, that's right, they thought the best artist of the whole of the 20th Century was Robbie Williams.

I watched this last night and heard mention , several times, that the chart positions were based on the UK box office takings. Full Monty was no.1
HTH.

I had a similar bluster and splutter with Shawshank and Goodfellas before I figured out it must be based on box office takings

I thought titanic was #1, but i was turning it off for bed, so wasnt exactly gripped.

But i saw it from about number 8, which was The Mask.

However i would have thought Star Wars Phantom menace would have been number 1, as it took a staggering amount of money at box office due to the expectation.

Where was it in the list?

You're right, I was drifting in and out of sleep. FM was no. 2 and Titanic no.1
Sorry smile
I watched it all and I can't remember Star Wars PM even getting a mention.

I don't think Notting hill got a mention either. Maybe because they were released half way through the year the box office receipts weren't formally released until 2000?

I remember Mark Lamarr having a rant about that on Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

They put crap like this on at peak hours and "Person of Interest" is tucked away after 11? Channel 5 are also the masters of spending 5 minutes recapping the previous 15 making a 15 minute program last 45.

Well that's ruined it for me.

I expected The Castle (1997) to be #2 and Office Space (1999) to be #1
