Recently had a decorator in to quote, and he says he'll be using Valspar trade paint, anyone had any experience with this?

A quick Google reviews loads of people complaining about the quality of the paint, but it all seems to be the standard stuff you can get in B&Q. I've figured that:

a) The trade paint is most likely better then the consumer stuff the average joe buys in B&Q
b) He's a professional, there must be a reason that he uses the Valspar stuff

So, anyone experienced the Valspar trade stuff?

Tried it, took it back and got a refund. The Valspar emulsion was thin watery stuff and even after several coats was uneven and looked awful. Might have improved in the past couple of years, but I'll never try it again.

^^ this. A bit thin, took lots of coats, seemed to get 'grubby' after a while. Have since re painted with a Leyland emulsion from a 'proper' trade supplier, can't believe the difference in paint and finish, much much better.

If the decorator is doing the job, does it matter how thin and hence how many coats it takes?

How many coats/how long it takes him doesn't concern me, it's the quality of the finish and the durability of the paint afterwards that's my concern.

We have a 3yr old, and another on the way, so durability of the paint is important.

The reviews online are a mixed bag to say the least! For every person saying its the worst paint ever there's someone else saying the complete opposite. I'm assuming there's a reason he's switched from the standard choice of Dulux to Valspar though

Didn't even know Valspar had a trade version.

And I can't even imagine a pro decorator not using one of the proven trade brands.
That is of course, unless they can't get credit and trade terms at a trade centre...

Wouldn't touch it with a bargebrush. Dulux or Johnstones is all you should ever use.

To add a bit of contrast, I decorated my living room with the basic Valspar from B&Q last year, despite having read the same bad reviews, and there were lots of them!

I was really impressed with the application and felt it was easier to apply and better quality than the Dulux I had used form B&Q in my last house, before they moved to Valspar.

Edit - no kids but 1 year on and still looks fresh. Took 2 coats to apply and very good coverage.

I keep going back to Permoglaze which is a bit more expensive but excellent quality - gloss lasts ages, white doesn`t yellow & the emulsion covers so well you can even thin it a little. If you have a look at some of the painters forums you`ll get some other opinions:

Hope it works out well.

I've heard hundreds of complaints about Valspar paint so I decided to buy a tin when it was on offer to see if it was as bad as people said.

It is awful stuff, far too thin, poor opacity, three or four coats minimum which for a trade paint is very poor.

Definitely not a premium product for the price they charge for it.

B&Q seem ignorant to the complaints and have put it down to people not knowing how to paint, well I do know how to paint and can say it is utter bks.

We are in the middle of doing our place.
Using Valspar premium matt.

2 coats and its perfect. Wears well (2yo and 3yo), wipes down etc.

Colour match service is also excellent.

Just my experience.

Farrow and Ball was woeful by contrast.

On ceiling, I've used Dulux vinyl matt white and its brilliant also.

Armstead Trade from most decorator centres is good.

I think Screwfix sell it as well.

£13 + Vat for 10 litres of matt emulsion. Nice and thick and covers really well, doing a light colour change with 1 coat.

No idea how wipeable it is, though. Have used Dulux endurance or whatever it is on their matt emulsions. Didn't think much of it. Would just pay extra and have a silk or eggshell in the future if it needs to be wipeable.
