So yesterday Royal Mail tried to deliver a parcel however my butler was out running errands on my behalf and obviously I don't open doors when I pay someone to do that. So instead a card was left by the postman.

This states that I can collect my parcel the next working day which in my eyes would be Monday. However they are open today (I would get my butler to call but they are not open yet) so technically for a postman today is a working day.

So question for you all, can I collect this package today or tomorrow?

Phone them up and ask?

I often get those cards but just go down the sorting office when I get home from work and it's there to collect.

I suspect it varies by area.

I would just go down and see ... I would imagine the van would have been emptied after the Saturday shift so would be ready for collection ...

Go in and ask. You can phone but if they are busy they may just say call tomorrow. As above it varies area by area.

Your chances are slim IMO. My local delivery office only does missed delivery collections between 1000 and 1400 week days, never mind on a Sunday.

I've just consulted my copy of "Debretts guide to the receivement of chattels through the medium of Mr Rowland Hills new express materiels system", and chapter 7, page 5 says that it is permitted and acceptable in time of domestic staff flux to despatch the under gardener to collect your parcel...

Thank you kind sir I will dispatch them immediately and post their response. It would appear I was looking in the wrong place as one was browsing debretts people of today for that answer but I found no postmasters or substitutes.

For the poster above the estate post office is open at the following times:

Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 0700 - 1700
Wed 0700 - 2000
Sat 0730 - 1330
Sun 1100 - 1500

Clearly a better opening hours than you have.

I've questioned similar. They only say next day to allow the postie to get back to the depot and the parcel to get put through to the collection office. I've pitched up there at the end of the same day and managed to get my parcel. Despatch the gardner if the place is still open. He'll need your passport if the things in your name though.

The cards used to say allow 3 hours before attempting to collect so it's probably staff cutbacks in the sorting office why it's changed to next day

They may have done some 3-5 years ago, Its more to do with covering larger areas. For example have you checked out your local post boxes collection time. In our area its still a tea time one. Up near my brothers outside Blackpool its Am 7.30. They have merged 3 collection offices into one big one. Collections FROM Post Offices are now timed from around 4.20 to 5pm dependant where you are. One positive aspect is the ability to arrange a redelivery to a local Post Office for a charge of a 70p you can arrange this. BUT whilst the Post Office local to you may tout times as from 7am to 10pm you might find your item is actually locked away in the Post Office Department and cant be retrieved from the counter. That means you have to go between the normal 9 - 5 times the Post Office section is open.

We used to work 5.30-12.30 so in those days pretty much everything we carded would be back ready to pick by 1pm the same day.

We/I now work 7.30-3 so the whole 3 hour thing no longer works, also won't be long until we're on 9-5 with a collection bolted onto the end of a delivery so no way you could collect your item the same day then.

progress

You'll find it's "Out on the van" still if you were to go back before 1700 (weekdays anyway). I've had a few parcels arrive in recent months where I ended up going to collect. First time I went at about 1400 and the bloke behind the counter told me to come back after 1700 as it hadn't been registered as returned so was likely still on the van. Next time it happened I went back after 1700 only to find it still hadn't come back, so had the luxury of coming back Saturday morning to stand in a queue of about fifty others trying to collect their parcels. Lovely.

Quite possible your postie finished the delivery then went straight on to a collection , hence why the parcel wasn't ready for you.

At the bigger offices ( bear in mind mine is a tiny rural office of 5 deliveries so it runs differently) i think the returned parcels are scanned back in as being ready for collection .

When staffing is on a shoestring , callers office staff will be borrowed to complete deliveries and then you get a back log of returned parcels that need scanning back in.

Still as long as we're still making profit for the shareholders that's all the matters , right ?

Why not just send jeeves?

I assume their next working day rather than the next business day?

Why assume anything?

The car clearly says next working day , then it clearly lists the days and opening times.

Just follow the instructions or get your imaginary man servant to.

I take it you've docked him an hours pay for leaving work?

Well it stumped me as I believed that a working day was also a business day. Which is why I turned to PH I knew I was going to try and call/collect today but thought why not ask the masses on what they thought a working day/business day is.
