Evening all.

I'm in the reasonably fortunate position where, via my employer, I can get a decent saving on gift cards/vouchers for a few big name high street jewellers.

I'm considering treating myself to my first Tag (cue howls of derision!). Nothing too high end, probably an F1 chrono around the £1100 price point. As you can imagine, I'm not overly enamoured in paying full window price so was interested to hear of any success stories in haggling with the big boys.

Ideally I'd like to get 20% off the window price, then pay the balance in full on a gift card that I've also managed to secure a decent discount in buying. Is this even remotely achievable?

I bought an Oris Aquis in October last year from Chisolm Hunter. It was £1200 but for cash they would have taken £1000.

I said "what's the best you can do on price?" The assistant toddled of to "speak to the manager" and took off the £200 without much fight.

I ended up part financing it and they gave me the first service free. They said there is no way to haggle when financing, in case that crossed your mind.

Enjoy your new watch!

You should be able to get 20% off a TAG from a high street jewelers no problem, but i think the gift/ discount cards only allow you to purchase things at the full retail price with no further discounting.

I couldn't see that in the terms anywhere. Hopefully that's not the case

I purchased a omega seamaster planet ocean chrono from Goldsmiths last year, salesman offered 10% off straight away, managed what i thought was a healthy 15% eventually.

Skip to this year,Picked up a Steve McQueen Monaco with £950 knocked off the rrp at an independent, they also threw in a nice strap (£45).
Back to Goldsmiths again for a omega speedmaster moon watch, only managed a £550 discount, and another spare strap (£40)but still very happy.

Just be cocky but polite,If you don't ask you don't know.

I managed to get over 5% off my Panerai at David M Robinsons recently, but they said as they're so popular, they couldn't give any more. I was pretty happy with that though.

Cheers

I'd still be surprised if they did bargain on a gift card tbh. Cash is king when driving a deal,

That was my initial fear. Although with a gift card, they've had their "cash" already

I'm afraid that you're not getting a decent saving on the card. You are merely foregoing any discount that would have been available in store and getting that same discount on the card.

When you're ready to buy, I'd go to the store and ask them what they can do price wise. If they beat the discount you'd be getting on the card, you're quids in. If they don't tell them what you can get on the card and ask them to beat it if you buy today. Explain that the alternative is you go away, order the card and buy from another branch ('cus you're not going to be around this branch again for a while  .)

You'll be able to get a discounted sale item on the gift card, but I highly doubt they will discount a full priced item when paying with a gift card.

Why would they?

I can buy Goldsmiths reloadable gift cards at a 25% discount via my employer. In October i purchased a Tudor BB and managed a small discount (3% ish) , but as soon as the gift card was mentioned it was full retail. Not the end of the world as ive now flipped that watch and lost nothing. The assistant explained that they knew the cards are loaded at a discount and in turn wont negotiate on the sale price. It also couldn't be used against Rolex and a few other brands too.
