Spotted this on the worlds favourite on line auction website earlier
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/152571432766

Draw your own conclusions but here's what I noticed
From the ad " unusually pre-dates the production of the 25 se cars"
No se wheels
Has se decals inc the special edition ones but none on the front wings and no numbers
Allegedly has NCK engine
So clearly not an se so is it
1 a 350i with factory fitted NCK from new with some se stickers slapped on it
2 a 350i with an NCK engine fitted at a later date with some se stickers slapped on
3 a 350i with a std engine and some NCK and se stickers slapped on

The vendor has knowlege of NCK engines and the 25 350se's and is aware that this isn't one of them but is still promoting it as such - very annoying

This car has come up for debate before, probably more than once. I remember it because I have owned two 350SE's in the past. If my memory serves me right, the conclusion was, that in fact, it was a car made for the first owner to replace a previous 350SE that was written off. Consequently, it's not one of the official 25 originally built, but is a genuine 350SE built by the factory. That is how I remember it. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply Tony but the ad clearly states " unusually pre dates the production run of 25 SE cars " how can it be a replacement for a car that was built AFTER this one ??
Also what's an "old English interior" ??

I think there is some confusion here. It states that the car was first registered September 1990. That can't be right as it would then be an H reg. and this car is a G reg. Also, if it was registered late 1990 then it can't be pre the official 25. I remember this car previously being discussed as a replacement for an accident damaged 350SE, unless I'm confusing it with another car, which I doubt as the car in question was also metallic grey 350SE without a number allocated to the initial 25.

It turns out that this car is in fact a 350i with a 3.9 factory engine but not a genuine SE. I belive that was the conclusion on the last time it came up for debate. I was getting confused with another SE discussion on the forum.

Well, everyone wants good money for their car and anything 4 litre or more seems to be fetching around 10k in the wedge world these days. What you need to asses, is what else can be bought for that money for a similar car. It's worth what anyone is willing to pay I suppose but you could make an offer and see what happens.

This is an interesting subject as to what makes an SE.

My own car is a genuine car out of the original run, but is does have one major problem. The original NCK engine was over reved and blew up (Number 5 con rod went through the side of the rendering the engine scrap.

The engine was then replaced witha V8 developments short engine hairy cam, high compression pistons, Top hat linered block etc.

In terms of originality it doesn't have the orginal engine but now has a higher spec engine.

How would you rate it ?

If i got hold of an NCK engine would it be worth swapping it back ? knowing youe have an almost new engine ?

Thoughts please ?

Mike

Ah yes, the old "Trigger's broom" question!

I personally would still consider yours a 350SE and valued as such. Engine is within the spirit of the orginal fit, so it doesn't detract or add to the value. If it were some 5.4 Wildcat engine on throttle bodies, that would be different.

Just my opinon.

For the ebay car - it should value slightly above a similar condition 350i, but not to the value of a 350 or 400SE. £8 or 9K tops for me.

It's an SE if the factory sold it as one so yours is an SE. A non-original engine will de-value the car but at this end of the market it won't be worht swapping back to the original engine - you'd have to stick a nought on to the end of values for that to happen. Sounds like you've got a great car thumbup
