Hi guys,
I'm planning on doing the legendary mongol Rally next year.
If you haven't heard of it it's a rally for crap cars from London to mongolia.
The rules are that the car must be:
-less than 1000cc (=1L) but they'll accept anything up to 1200 (1.2L)
-it should cost around £200 but I'm thinking of spending £500.
-no 4x4
Most people use Nissan Micras but I don't want to be boring and just copy everyone else!
Any ideas???
Also if anyone has already done this rally, do you have any advice? Like how did you find your sponsors and team mates!

Thanks everyone!

Stretching your budget slightly, but looks PERFECT! biggrin

Would love to do a Rally one year, never had had the funds though.

I've thought about them, they seem quite good. Do you know how safe they are?

You're looking at a <£500 small car to do a trans-continental roadtrip in and your primary worry is safety... Maybe the mongol rally isn't for you biggrin

Out of the 2000 cars for sale that meet your criteria, it is the only one that has proved it can make it!

Just had a look at mongol rally website.

Rule #2......."You're completely on your own"

Other notes......no set route .no back up.

Hehe, I'd be more looking into robustness personally, nothing you will be looking at will be 'that' safe, hell look at K11 Micra, the most common rally car, when they have a head-on, even new, they had a habit of splitting down the middle in a front end collision, and that's before ~15-20 years of rust has been at them. However you can repair pretty much everything on them with a hammer and a 10mm socket.

FTFY. Not in a PH pedant way; just removing all doubt about a 106 being the perfect car.

954cc, 4-speed, manual choke. Pretty much unburstable engine. (Although probably mostly dead in this guise by now, as I think this particular engine config was phased out in the S2s).

The new shape are now cheaper than a half decent MK1 Panda ,which are also quite difficult to find for sale.

Ebay has 7 old ones ,from a few hundred to 7000 GBP for a 4x4.

That's 6 more than when I last looked a few months ago.

Another thing, do you think it's worth buying the car from outside the UK so that it's LHD?

No.

how much extra hassle do you want ?

Used cars are generally more expensive in EU compared to UK anyway.
