Worlds most flexible engine

Warm hatches, runarounds, taxi's, rep-mobiles, small vans, big vans. It has found its way into them all, an extremely versatile unit.
I think you have somewhat missed the OPs point, with the PD experience gone having a powerband of approximately 100rpm (of course whole within that band all the owners will claim they are the fastest thing in the land, especially with a remap and a smoke cloud!). I googled:
http://gizmodo.com/how-to-turn-dry-pasta-into-a-ro...
admittedly, it has to be wet to be flexible and probably doesn't work as an engine anymore at that point, but it's a start.
That said I'm quite impressed by the way the units are stated. Was about to moan "that's impossible, that's not how torque and power work"... but it changes from one to the other at exactly the right point. Smart. And demonstrates the nature of the turbo I guess. "I can provide enough air to cause everything else problems - up to this point, then ah'm oot"

Quite. I've seen owners of remapped 1.4 PD engines claiming that they are able to 'bother' RS6s. They really are infuriating people. Reminds me of this advert, only without any wry self-awareness...

t yeah I have, I thought he meant flexibility as in how many applications of the motor, rather than how wide they can make the torque band, aye the PD gives you everything between ~2200-3800, bugger all before & bugger all after
. Slightly biased as an owner, but have a look at BMW's N73 engine. (6l NA v12)
Never less than 325lb/ft from 1000 > 6500
> 380 bhp from approx. 4600 > 6500.
It might weigh 2200+ kgs, but you can honestly keep up with most day-to-day traffic without ever going over 2k rpm. That said, the noise from 4k to the redline is just sublime!
And that's a 2002 engine design. As per the recent Alpina B7 thread, 600+ hp with 2 turbos, I suspect that's even better.

I nominate the latest RS3 , i cant see any other car on sale (or not) with such a spread of torque against rpm . What a powerband :
Power 395bhp at 5850-7000rpm; Torque 354lb ft at 1700-5850rpm
Does anyone have anything else ?

over 800hp & 700lbs from 1500 - 6500 rpm & I can pull away in 4th. Do I win ?

As a recent purchaser of a PD engined car, this 100%

If you stay in that band, you can convince yourself quite well that you're driving a fast car (and what good fun it is doing so)...
