No more MOTs

For those that cant be arsed to read it all, cars that are old enough to get zero RFL will no longer have to be tested from May 20th 2018.
This will affect 2 of my vehicles, not sure it is a good idea, I may very well do it voluntarily just as a form of discipline.

Could this potentially allow a lot of old rusty shells to have thier origonal registration plates transferred off? or did they already remove the tax/mot requirement for doing that ?

Isn't this just replacing the former hard cut-off date (1972 or something?) with a rolling window? Makes sense to me.

Former hard cut off was 1960, so this is quite a big leap affecting a lot of cars at once. But I agree, it makes sense to harmonise it with the historic tax class.

think he means approaching 3 years. on the 3rd year anniversary its first MOT will be due so only exempt for that first 3 years.

What this change will do is remove any evidence that, once a year, a basic safety check has been carried out; drivers will still be responsible for ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy.

That does seem to have gone away, there was mention of it in the "real good number plates" thread I think. Something about having to have owned the vehicle for five years or more, though.

I can imagine that there will be some desperate old heaps around with this, not sure its going to be carnage but having seen various 40 odd year old cars fail mots for a litany of faults it is scary that they now dont have to have one.

All that "Will need doing for the MOT" now might not get done, rust, worn suspension, cracked tyres etc
