PistonHeads at Le Mans 2018

Yes, we're getting prepared already! Register your interest for PHLM18 here

What an absolute belter of a finish we had for this year's Le Mans. LMP1 may have been a bit less exciting than 2016, but GTE Pro more than made up for it. But what will next year bring? Can Aston retain its title with a new car, or will Ford take another victory? Perhaps Porsche could win in GTE having taken P1 victory this year...

Yep, it's Classic time again!
Yep, it's Classic time again!
Here at PH we love a trip to Le Mans, whether it's for the 24 or the Classic. Given the success we had this year, we thought we'd get the excitement going early for PHLM18. The official PH camping at Le Mans weekend is very popular, so register your interest in attending to prevent you from missing out and you'll be the very first to hear when tickets go on sale.

2018 sees the return of the bi-annual Le Mans Classic, and is for those that like to enjoy Le Mans at a more leisurely pace. It's a smaller event with a more relaxed feel, but is still an incredible celebration of motorsport - one not to miss.

As our regulars will already know, and those making the trip for the first time will find out, the PH campsite is the best place to stay at Le Mans, and fills up quickly. We've once again teamed up with our excellent partners at 1st Tickets so, aside from that certain je ne sais quoi created only when 450 PHers and a grid of LMP cars are brought together under the French summer sun, there are many more tangible reasons why a place on the PH campsite is so sought after. These include but are not limited to:

- General admission to the race.
- Up to five-day return Channel crossings are available.
- Pre-allocated camping pitches mean there's no rush - your space will be set out for you, whenever you arrive.
- Free Wi-Fi access.
- Cooked meals included (3x full English breakfast and 3x evening meals)
- Fenced perimeter for your peace of mind.
- On-site security, including night patrols at the weekend, to protect your car and belongings.
- Private toilets and warm showers, so no long queues for the facilities.
- Large marquee with a cash bar - a social hub for all campers whatever the weather, with live TV coverage of the race so you don't miss any of the action.

This is a great event to go to, really enjoyable.

Whereabouts is the PH campsite?

The main PH "enclave" is Bleu Nord although they've a smaller site at Premier Vert that is closer to the track though that's the site where you have to camp away from your car - each has its own benefits. Brian or Caroline at 1st Tickets are the best point of reference. We've done 5 yrs with PH/1st Tickets at Bleu Nord & I'd find it difficult to go anywhere else I think.

I think the answer to the above is that there are too many variables to give a sensible estimate I.e, which crossing route/meals included/pre-erected tents etc. etc?

Brian at 1st Tickets has the PH name of Chum Racing.PM him & he'll look after you.

As MrC986 says the package price depends on a number of things, such as your crossing route, size of pitch and number of people per pitch/car.

However, assuming there were two of you travelling in one car via Eurotunnel our 2017 price was £550 per person. This price includes your channel crossing, general admission, camping on the Bleu Nord private campsite with all its facilities, 3 x full English breakfast and 3 x two course evening meals. For more detail on our2017 prices and crossing options please click here.

With the pound being even weaker against the Euro than this time last year, we expect there to be around a 3-5% increase in price. Although we will carry out a price review in March 2018 to see if we have better our Euro budget rate and pass on any saving on to you.

Plus 24 security, secure compound and very large toilet and shower block (regularly cleaned) and minimal queing. Bleu Nord was 4 mins walk to track and only another 5 mins or so up start/finish straight and village area. Large marquee with seating for meals, a pay bar, 2 large TVs and wifi and charging points and other stuff going on - pretty excellent for going to main 24 hour race. Good place to get to most of the tribunes from.

edit: Bleu Nord near airport runway about 1km down(south) from main vehicle/spectator entrance to Le Mans (with tunnel going under curve leading to Dunlop chicane/bridge) and walking from site you come in by big wheel or just before the Porsche experience centre and the Ford Chicane/pit entrance as cars go round circuit.

If you're feeling "flush" the Bleu Nord option is also close to the airfield - we gave ourselves a treat this year and had a helicopter flight on the Saturday evening to watch the race briefly from the air which although not cheap, was well worth it to understand the size of the event. 1st Tickets can organise helicopter flights as well.

If your considering crossing options, consider where you live versus the nearest crossing as the schlep down/back using the Tunnel is a fair trip compared to say going to Le Havre or Caen on the ferry as you can save fuel/toll £s using these routes & the travel time is more pleasant with more back roads to explore driving

Already reserved my spot at the 1st tickets again for next year. This will be my third year and every time i have been its been amazing.

What you need to know is that everyone who goes to LeMans and doesn't stay at the Pistonheads site (but nearby) looks into the site wishing they had. its clean, well organised, safe and has excellent showers beer and food.

so i recommend it. if you have done it before but not stayed there, its worth trying. if you are planning on breaking your LeMans duck, this is a great way to do it.

See you in June !

Hi Brian, I spoke to the very helpful Caroline earlier today and I had also registered via the PH email sent out a few weeks ago.
I now have 6 friends wanting to come too! We are Huddersfield based, so will be crossing Hull to Zeebrugge on the Wednesday night to an early start/drive down to Le Mans on the Thursday morning.

Should we book the Hull to Zeebrugge return ferry/cabins ourselves as it's £202 per person which I think is good and then book (fingers crossed!) the rest with you? As I'm guessing that once the tickets are being sold for the PH campsite, the ferry operators will increase their prices? Plus, it's one less job for you!

Anyway, really hope we can get sorted, it will be the longest blast in my DB9, very excited!

is no one else thinking that the event itself (which we all know is secondary to the mass jaunt/camping/pi55 up) will be a bit of a damp squib?
GTE aside..... you'll have what, Peugeot vs Toyota in LMP1?

god it is isn't it... frown
Last 3 years I've gone, and by hour no.2 I've lost track of the 'race'... but Porsche/Audi/Toyota have been big enough battles to be interested about, even though it's the RSR's, Aston V12s and Vette's that really make me smile...I'm not going next year (along with the rest of the troop)...we're currently debating a longer roadtrip to watch Moto GP in Italy...

Which I am quite excited by.

The loosing track of the race is whats great about it. The drivers have to stay focused and we get to swan around and dip in and out of the race / have beers / look at other cars etc.

At the moment LMP1:
Toyota
Manor
Dragonspeed
Bykolles
SMP

At least 7 cars in this class. Could be more

Not wanting to pour cold water on one of, if not, the best races in the world.
But that list of top flight manufacturers doesn't quite have the same ring as it once did frown

You're right, but part of the attraction of LMP1 has always been to see the large-scale factory efforts going head-to-head.

It's also different away from the racing without the financial injection from the likes of Audi.
