Scirocco axed!

VW calls time on its coupe, replaced on the production line by the T-Roc...

While the news won't come as surprise to anyone, the confirmation that a likeable and stylish coupe has met its maker - indirectly replaced by a small SUV - isn't exactly pleasant to report.

This still looks pretty smart, doesn't it?

So yes, production of the VW Scirocco has come to an end, with the last build slots completed and the final cars emerging at dealers. While obviously not a direct replacement, the T-Roc small SUV has taken its spot on the production line.

First seen as that Iroc concept back at the 2006 Paris show, the production car arrived in 2008 to considerable acclaim. Then the R arrived in 2009 and was certainly the best Scirocco from a PH perspective. It may have had less power than a contemporary Golf R but it was also lighter (because of being front-wheel drive) and much more fun as a result.

Now that's no more; while rumours abound of an electric replacement, for now your fast VW thrills can only be found in a Golf GTI of some kind. Which seems kind of a shame.

You could get a Golf; or you could have a 'Roc...
You could get a Golf; or you could have a 'Roc...
But of course it does also mean that it could be the perfect time to buy a Scirocco. There must surely be deals to be had on cars like this DSG GT with just 100 miles on it; remember this car is based on an older platform and, to be honest, they need to be sold. See as well this manual R at £28K, this 1.4 GT with less than 2,000 miles and a white GTS with 220hp; all 2017 registrations and all at VW dealers - there's surely some business to be done there.

Having been around for nearly a decade there are plenty of older Sciroccos to choose from as well. This 2012 R looks great at less than £15K with the rare manual gearbox, one owner and a full main dealer service history. For half that, this red 200hp GT is available at a VW garage with 74,000 miles and splitting the difference is this 170hp DSG diesel, in the attractive Rising Blue with the big wheels. Not exactly the purist's choice, but it goes to show what's on offer. Certainly if it's taken until now for you to realise a Scirocco is the car you want, you're spoilt for choice!

Replacing it with yet another SUV for the terminally unimaginative. Do manufacturers know the S stands for sport, not stereotyped?

Re-badged Audi Q2.

The bigger surprise to much of the population was that it was actually still in production.

I gather volumes have been really low for years now and to all intents VW seemed to have given up on development years ago.

A shame really as they were a decent steer, but its no wonder sales were slow when other than a few (minor) tweaks it dates back to 2008.

The 2014 facelift was a missed opportunity especially after they decoded to keep the EA113 engine in the R.

Boring boring people who want an SUV over a sports car. VW are just following what most people want. Shame though

Unfortunately, a large part of it's demise is people opting for a 5 door car.

Its not even just that though. Lack of development have left it being a car thats based on 2.5 generations ago of Golf. Lack of investment = lack of sales and becomes self perpetuating.

True true. Obviously axing a product line is no quick feat, so this has probably been in the pipeline for many years.

Dieselgate will have huge implications for new models for the next few years. No money for new lines, just rehash of existing platforms...

I dont agree. Whilst dieselgate will have caused them vast discomfort its not a show stopper for them - theres the new T Roc, Arteon, new Polo coming out soon and the Golf has just had a refresh. Thats before you consider what Porsche, Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Bentley are doing.

Using existing platforms is the norm, not a fallback position.

Indeed. Plus the shape is looking old now, so probably massive money required for a new model which has been deemed to be niche and perhaps not terribly profitable.

I quite liked the Scirocco. But as a Golf derived coupe, I prefer the Audi TT.
To build the T-Roc makes a lot of sense to VW! I quite like it, in the same way I like the RR Evoque.

They will sell them like hot cupcakes, I'm sure!

It's very strange they didn't facelift these cars and whack the engine and 4WD system from the Golf R in them. When I bought my R I would have had the Scirocco in front of the Golf in a heart beat!

Modifying the old mk5 Golf platform to take the Golf R's hardware probably wouldn't have been easy so it quite possibly would have required an all-new car based on MQB.

They managed OK with the MK6 R which is the same platform as the MK5 Golf and the Scirocco plus the MK5 R32 and the odd MK5 diesel model had 4wd.
