Looking to move and have successfully sold our current house, and whilst I know you can't have everything and will need to make compromises, the places we've viewed just don't have 'IT'.

one particular issue is, and i don't know if it's me being ignorant or that they are proper concerns.
We took a look at a property this weekend, very very nice but we worked out the garden was East facing. Given that we both like to sit out side when ever we can and chill out, and currently have a SW facing garden, how much of an issue would it be ?

I just have it in my head that during the evening, the house will be casting a shadow on the garden and that it won't be as warm in the summer, and will be even damper in the winter months ?

On a hot day it'll be nicely shady by the house. biggrin Sunsets will be disappointing though.

Is there space to put a seating area @ the top of the garden to catch the evening sun?

Our back garden is north facing and not ideal as the shadows cast from the fences and trees are surprisingly large from relatively early in the afternoon unless we're in the height of summer. It means that we have to sit in the most easterly part of the garden to catch the sun in the evenings. I suspect an east facing garden wouldn't be much fun at all and, as someone above said, that part of the house will only receive the sun first thing in the morning and be quite dark for much of the year.

You'll have no sun after noon unless it's huge.

Personally I prefer the shade as a baldy bd but then I like gardening too so don't listen to me.

thanks all.
the garden is quite long, but not 'that' long, so with all consideration we'll pass on this one !

Depends how long. When we lived in a semi with an east facing garden it was okayish.

The patio by the house kept the sun till 2-3pm, then a seating area about 20m away kept the sun until 7pm. Mornings were nice and sunny, plus the long south facing fence was ideal for growing. On a hot day it was quite pleasant, breakfast and lunch outside in the sunshine, a bit of shade by the house at the hottest part of the day. You do tend to be either chasing the sun or shade around though.

We now have a south facing garden, I do prefer it but the back rooms can get very hot in august.

Top tip for all you house buyers.

If you are not sure of a gardens aspect have a look for a sky dish.
They point south south east.

The dish points to where the sun will be at about 10 o clock on a summers morning.

Used to live in a house with east facing garden, and the biggest difference to me was on warm summer days. We like sitting outside until quite late, and on a warm day the west side would still be toasty hot hours after you started feeling a chilly in the garden.
