Dear Coolhands,

eBay is happy to announce plans to further improve the customer experience by intermediating payments on our Marketplace platform. In doing so, eBay will manage the payments flow, simplifying the end-to-end experience for both buyers and sellers. We have signed an agreement with Adyen, a leading global payments processor, to become our primary payments processing partner. PayPal, a long-time eBay partner, will be a payments option at checkout for eBay buyers.

You do not need to take any action at this time. The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey.

Over the past three years, eBay has transformed its business to drive the best choice, most relevance and most powerful selling platform. Building out our payments capabilities is the next step in that strategy.

Payments intermediation will bring significant benefits for eBay sellers. You can expect a simplified pricing structure, more predictable access to funds, and most sellers can expect their costs of payments processing to be reduced. We’re also working on ways to provide sellers a central place to track and manage their business, which can soon include payments information.

By offering buyers more choice in how they pay and expanding payment options into more geographies, eBay believes sellers will be able to reach more buyers and improve conversion.

The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey. eBay will begin intermediation on a small scale in North America starting in the second half of 2018, expanding in 2019 under the terms of the Operating Agreement with PayPal. In 2021, we expect to have transitioned a majority of Marketplace customers to the new payments experience.

Again, you do not need to take any action at this time. As eBay gets closer to the initial phase of its intermediation efforts, we will share more details about this process and next steps for sellers. In the meantime, please read the eBay Inc announcement for further information. For any immediate questions or to share feedback, please email paymentsinfouk@ebay.com.

We’re looking forward to what’s next, and to getting there with you.

As always, thank you for selling on eBay.

It means they're ditching PayPal as the preferred payment method and bringing in their own system. Which seems odd as they used to own PayPal.

Cursory check doesn't say that Adyen is owned by eBay.
EBay not even mentioned on their site!

presumably on splitting out paypal there was a tie in period - I suspect that ebay will make more money this way...

I imagine it also means that eBay takes your money, eBay holds your money just long enough to make a little bit of interest on it, then eBay passes it on to the seller. Then eBay will also make money from transaction fees too, instead of those transaction fees currently going to PayPal.

And what will happen with disputes. Can’t believe they’re introducing a new standard payment and PayPal will be the ‘option’, now that everyone has PayPal! Another fking account!

I'd imagine it'll all be done through your eBay account.

How will this work in Germany? I'm pretty sure over there paypal isn't compulsary. If it means I can get one over on ebay, that would almost be justification for earning the language and relocating.

I remember winning the auction for a bike and tried to contact the seller to arrange collection and payment. Every single ‘contact’ link I clicked sent me to “ Please pay now by PayPal”
There was no way to simply send a message to the seller.

Recently tried to view something and asked the seller for their address, and he got a warning off eBay for sending address and phone number in a message. They are desperately trying to lock everything down so they control every part of the process. And this new ‘customer experience’ is a part of that.

I’ve had my account suspended twice for telling people my address, or sending contact details.
The second time it was kind of accidental, someone bought something but wanted to pay cash. I never noticed they hadn’t actually hit the buy it now button as we’d been having a conversation about the item. I arranged to meet them in a car park near their house as a family member we were visiting lives nearby. Ebay didn’t like that and suspended me.
I even had a warning on my business account ( I have a private and a business Ebay account), just for having a conversation with someone who’d already purchased an item.
I sent him a link to a short film a friend had made. Against eBay rules apparently, but I have no idea why.
I complained to them via chat, but they don’t really care.

I've got round the 'no contact details' rule in the past by sending via eBay messaging a photo with my email address scribbled on it.

And again, why do people insist on using that fking website to sell stuff????

Granted, it gets a wider audience but there are plenty of local groups around.

I have been using my local one and have sold everything that I have advertised with no fees and zero problems.

The guy I wanted to meet pointed me to a local rugby club page, told me his contact details were on there. Pretty pish poor having to skulk around like criminals to do business. eBay will tell you to check the goods out before buying, but how the hell can you do that if they refuse to let you contact the people??

I binned them totally about 8 years ago, when they locked my Paypal account and could not tell me why. Several expensive international phone calls to them and they could only answer “it is automatic security and we can’t unlock it”.

I only reopened it a year ago for something to do, and I needed PayPal for something.

Because it's really easy to sell things on there, thousands of things are sold a day and we hear about the vocal tiny minority of issues that arise.
