A few years ago I was filtering on the left side of stopped traffic and partly over cycle lane painted tarmac (not the blue one). stopped by traffic cop, reported and given a £50 fine/no points.

Since then, I have never again filtered on this side or ridden over a cycle marked painted surface.

Every single day, all over London I see so many motorcyclists filtering on the left side of traffic and many time in cycle painted areas.. including those boxes at the lights. What is the law on this? In particular the blue painted stretches of tarmac indicating cycle way but shared with bus lanes for example.

There isn't a solid line between the two areas.

Similar to this:

My understanding is that a dotted line demarked cycle lane CAN be legally used as its a shared piece of road. However a solid lined cycles lane CANNOT because it isn't a shared piece of road.
If you got a ticket for a dotted demarked cycle lane that wouldn't seem correct to me.

In terms of cycle boxes - they are currently only enforced by a police officer and represent you effectively running a red light i.e. same ticket/offence

You can go into a cycle lane with a broken white line edge, just like a hatched area bordered by a broken white line in the middle of the road, if you need to. You can’t cross a solid white line though. What “if you need to” means though is pretty subjective.

I quite happily overtake in car and on bike in the hatched middle area, although that’s probably a bit naughty. There’s no way I’d filter down the inside in a cycle lane though, that’s just asking for disaster. I wouldn’t filter down the inside though on a normal road where I’m travelling between car and pavement.

Only in London would you attempt to filter on the nearside/curbside because you have no other choice in order to make progress - I won't do this in London with normal flowing traffic as you are correct this is asking for trouble - very slow moving or stationary only when there is no other option. There are times given a particular road layouts its the only way for motorbikes to make progress.
Most cops ignore bikes using all the roadspace available (esp those borderline areas) to make progress but clearly like the OPs case you can get one having a bad day who wants to make a point. Bikers use dotted hatching and cycle boxes daily without presenting any danger to themselves or other roadusers.

I just don't go on the inside now, ever, even if it is the only way to make it through the traffic I just wait now until cars move to allow me to continue my journey.

On this particular day I think they were trying to prove a point because their were a few bikes all getting stopped and their reasoning was bicycle riders were complaining to TFL about motorcycles using their space due to the increased traffic volume near temporary roadworks.

Sure I just think you were unlucky sadly - Cyclists don't really have a argument when its a shared piece of roadspace in my view. So many cyclist transgressions to the rules of the road observed everyday.

I’ll never understand why people make that argument. One of the first things you learn is two wrongs don’t make a right.
