Muffler delete...is any specific skill required?
Discussion
I have an M6 GC and want to do a muffler delete
I took it to a local exhaust fabricator and was quoted £350 including larger tips...
Now to me this seems a huge sum of money for what's involved.....chop the mufflers out and weld in a pipe with the new tips
I have a pal whose a skilled welder and he can do any welding although exhausts are not what he usually welds....But he can do all manner of welding
So my question is ....is any special knowledge required?
Or do I get it done for next to nothing plus the cost of the tips or do I stop being a tight ass and just pay the man £350
I know its an m6 etc but I'm loathe to spend £350 if it's as simple as it looks /sounds !

A 100k car and you're worried about 350 quid!
Unless your mate is skilled at exhausts, I'd have it done by someone that is.
Once upon a time it cost £100k yes !...fortunately a MUCH cheaper car now

I'm spending loads on the car on other mods so simply trying to figure out where some notes can be saved....as long as the saving is a sensible one
Its like panting your own house when you could really paint it yourself !

To answer your question since no-one else has - no special knowledge. It's just a bleddy pipe. But your friend may or may not have pipe in the correct diameter. That's about it really.
Finally an answer and not commentary !!Thanks mate...I can get the correct diameter pipes easily as I have another friend who works in car bits !!
Threads on this forum rarely seem to stay on track now. Too many people want to appear clever and berate people for grammar, terminology etc.
It's a f
king car enthusiast forum. We all know what someone means by muffler......
To answer your question op. I have an E39 535 which I'm doing a back box delete on (leaving only one resonator chamber to begin with). For cutting out one of the rear boxes and welding on some 76mm twin tips I'm being charged £200.
Yours does seem more expensive, but it is a M6, so may be more involving.

So for example "muffler delete" = "take the silencer off".
"Delete" as a term for "take something off a car" is a weird Americanism which will continue to be remarked upon and belittled until it dies a well-deserved death.
See also "stock".

"Muffler Delete", why not just cut the back box off ?
Well said. Are we suddenly in America, FFS?Muffler

Many of us have grown up with car forums, most of which are US based when it comes to mods like this. I'm 45 and understand muffler delete straight away and imho gets across what is wanting to be achieved far more succinctly.
Agree above, the cock waving on this forum is getting pathetic.

In relation to a car enthusiast talking about modifications, is it really that big a deal to cause arguments? So for example "muffler delete" = "take the silencer off".

What would happen if we simply accepted someone wanted to use an Americanism and offered some content towards their question?
