Hyundai i30 N Performance gets 320hp

Racechip cracks the code of the i30's ECU, gives it Type R matching power...

Back when the Hyundai i30 N was launched, a range of performance parts was also released - tyres, wheels, seats, brakes, anti-roll bars - which hinted at a more track focused product. Sadly they're currently only for Europe, but there are now other aftermarket alternatives for buyers after more edge from their i30.

RaceChip has worked its magic on the 275hp i30 N Performance, its ECU tune promising "more power for maximum performance and unbeatable driving pleasure." The vital numbers are 313hp and 367lb ft, significant gains from 275hp and 260lb ft. While RaceChip doesn't provide any performance times, that sort of boost is likely to markedly improve mid-range potency while also dropping the 0-62mph sprint by a tenth or two. That huge peak torque figure, for what it's worth, is just 2lb ft behind an Audi S4 and 20lb ft more than even an overboosted Focus RS.

Elsewhere the RaceChip mods are as you would expect, and emulate the official Hyundai upgrades. So there are lighter OZ Leggera HLT wheels, Eibach springs and ARBs, Michelin Pilot Spot 4S tyres plus, should you wish, an HJS downpipe that brings power up to 320hp (as well as 386lb ft) and "a rich and aggressive sound". In fact, RaceChip is so proud of the noise that they've made a video celebrating it...

Given the Hyundai is a great car (but not a flawless one), this sort of tinkering sounds like just the ticket to bring the N to life. That said, RaceChip is a German company, so sourcing the parts might be a little tricky. There's really only one thing for it, then - get those performance parts here Hyundai!

Thats more like it, power wise it drops it into much more interesting territory in terms of competition, massive torque increase.

Drove one and it certainly didnt feel lacking but more is always worth having and these do seem to be getting a following as they are really quite good, not that expensive and arent bad looker, kind of wished I had hung on a bit.

Not keen on that video.

Why did Hyundai not bring any of the upgrades to the UK market, given it's the biggest in the world for hot hatches and track days (AIUI)?

I fear my response may come across a bit boring for PH, but I have one of these, and the last thing I feel it really needs is more power.

On a track maybe, but on the road you cant use 100% of the performance it has as it is. I'd rather keep hold of my warranty too.

That video is a bit random! But it does sound glorious. You can never have too much power right? (Unless you want to help keep your driving license clean)

and extra 100 lbft through the std gearbox and clutch? Hmm, that could end expensively......

Cant you ?

I managed just fine, it puts it down very well (in the dry at least) with the LSD, minimal struggle for traction at low speed with full throttle, never an issue and for me, added interest and character.

I think these are a better hot hatch than the M135i I bought, the M135i does its own thing but the I30N fits the recipe better and feels really alive, great fun. Be interested to know how well they are selling.

I was talking more from the perspective of keeping a clean license ,not the car lacking any ability. As it is you can floor it on a nice B road and be well into 3 figures very easily. Maybe it's lost on me as its the most powerful car I've owned, for me its potent enough and I don't understand the desperation for more power.

I love the car, and for me its a keeper. I have a thread going in reader's cars if anyone is interested how I'm getting on with it, but I'll be keeping it standard, and hopefully keeping my licence clean as well laugh

why? audis and vws are turning up the wicks on the 2.0 TFSi engines to circa 500bhp and the boxes seem to be able to cope. cant see the Koreans being any worse unless the boxes are made of chocolate.

on the above note too with 500bhp from the VAG machines.......kind of puts the increase of this N from 275 to 320 into perspective. for those into their numbers "it aint all that"

I've driven a few cars with about 2x the power (admittedly not 2x power/weight) and you definitely can use more power than circa 300bhp, admittedly not very often, but it is pretty handy and nice!

Wonder why the official performance parts are Europe only?

Last time I checked, we're still in Europe ........... and will be for some time by the looks of it

You can take your Audi to ABT in Germany, get it chipped and keep the warranty. Yet here, it's void. Think it's the same for BMW.

It's funny how we (Britain) always get shafted with the tastiest cars, performance parts, tuning etc. Yet, we still probably pay more for our cars than the rest of Europe.

Not through a simple remap they aren't.

Good news this. Even if this one isn't available here, it won't be long before a UK tuner cracks the ECU I should imagine. I am very tempted by one of these. You can get one with a handful of miles for about £24k now, which doesn't seem bad at all. Might try to book a test drive.

I read in a Hyundai release that sales were quite a lot higher than anticipated. I hope they develop a good following. They seem to be going about the hot hatch business the right way at the moment. Maybe too many drive modes etc, but fun is at the heart of it.

You won’t get 500bhp from a remap, but you will get close to 400. It’s not cheap though if you use people like ABT.

Whilst this upgrade on the i30 is good, it only brings it into line with an S3/Golf R as standard.

Standard gearbox and driveshafts coping perfectly well even in my old car and that is running approx. 230bhp / 200lf ft more than they were "designed" to cope with. Clutch is upgraded though. I only managed to break a driveshaft doing repeated full boost launch control starts on a prepped drag strip. in hard road and trackday use they have been fine. On something fwd that can spin up the wheels it would be even less stress on them.

Anyway I digress. Am I the only one who thinks it sounds crap?
