What watch. Small men's, waffle dial, moon phase.....
Discussion
I don't think anyone will be able to help as I've been looking for this watch for about 5 years....
When I met Sarah my other half I fairly quickly bought her a tag as her first "decentish" watch. Since then there have been a few other nice little watches, nothing really extravagant but she's very much in to watches. Being 6ft she wears small men's watches very well. If budget allowed I'd get her a classic steel oysterdate or similar for this job but I can't quite justify the cost at the moment sadly.
She's recently got a great promotion and new job and I'd like to get her a present. Plus we've just got engaged. Added to the fact I haven't bought her a watch for ages.
Budget. Circa £500 max. I'd stretch for something special. But by the same token a lot of the watches I've been looking at have been circa £200.
Must be steel/silver. Does not like gold.
Is very interested in space/astronomy. Has lots of other watches would like to find a way to get something space/starry in. For me a pogue or speedmaster would be great but Sarah would prefer something visual. With that in mind I'd like a moon phase.
Simple, non gaudy design. Unfortunately a lot of moon phases seem to also be covered in sub dials and exposed movements. Steel or leather strap.
A subtle silver/cream/white waffle dial would be nice.

I found this. It's maybe a touch large, circa 39mm would be ideal.
Automatic ideally. Would consider quartz at a push.
Can be new or used.

For a space connection without the price tag of a speedmaster try taking a look at the Bulova Lunar Pilot - a modern reissue of the watch worn by Dave Scott during the Hadley Rille lunar expedition. The story goes that the original was his personal watch he carried with him. During the mission the crystal on his official Speedmaster came off so he used his Bulova.
One of the versions Bulova sell comes with a velcro strap with details of the mission and they all have engraving on the back with the details.
In budget too.

Based on that description, I'd look at either a Ball Ohio 2082 or Ball Trainmaster 3082
Unfortunately both around the £1,000 in sales price so second hand for your budget

These somewhat fit the bill.........not sure how big you want to go...the last one is 39mm.....I think the face on the first one is very nice...but at 34mm perhaps a little small.

The lunar pilot is very nice. I'd like it for me but I think will be too large for Sarah.
The certina is very nice. Possibly a touch fussy.... It's for a lady to wear with a suit, I think on a man it would be fine, on a lady in casual fine but probably too much for a lady in smart clothes unless she was trying to appear more masculine.
Don't like the aero watches at all I'm afraid. The balls are quite nice.
I think the closest on there are the orients it's pretty much the same selection I had found too. Unless any better suggestions come in I think they will be the way forward. Other than the moonphase one of my favourites on a lady would be a jlc Reverso but sadly she doesn't like them.

I googled 'soviet space watch', on the grounds that Russian watches are cheap (but can also be damned good) and any man's watch from the Soviet era is likely to be sub-38 mm.
£55 and looks rather nice. The blurb talks about the Sputnik rockets but doesn't mention these watches being worn on them, which is probably because they were unmanned flights. Maybe Leica the dog had one on?

There is a Certina non Chrono but possibly too large.

Longines do a 34mm Conquest but would be stretching the budget.

Or something like this.

The certina and longines are well worth considering thankyou!
How about Maurice LaCroix...

10% off on the webpage but fairly sure you'd be able to get 15% or more which brings it in budget.

Not an auto, but not a quartz either:

However the link to space might be a bit too abstract for your betrothed to appreciate (congratulations!)
Also, it pretty much fails on the elegant, has an exposed movement and doesn't have a moonphase.
But connection to space there definitely is and you should be able to pick one up in budget.

At the risk of being flamed here, how about something a little different....

"The crescent shape on the watch represents 12 hours, with the time running from left to right.https://mrjoneswatches.com/collections/ladies-watc...
Good luck
To find the hour, you’ll need to check the position of the sun or moon inside the crescent shape.
At 6am the sun rises on the left. It reaches the middle of the crescent at midday, then continues until it reaches the last marker on the right at 6pm. After 6pm the moon rises on the left while the sun sets. The position of the moon then marks the hours from 6pm until 6am."
A strangely attractive concept, but Google says the sun came up at 7.14 this morning and I think it only comes up at 6 am at the two equinoxes.
