Had this email this morning:

Hi there,

The last time you visited a porn website with teens,
you downloaded and installed the software I developed.

My program has turned on your camera and recorded
the process of your masturbation.

My software has also grabbed all your email contact lists
and a list of your friends on Facebook.

I have the - Sales.mp4 - with you jerking off to teens
as well as a file with all your contacts on my computer.

You are very perverted!

If you want me to delete both the files and keep the secret,
you must send me Bitcoin payment. I give you 72 hours for the payment.

If you don't know how to pay with Bitcoin, visit Google and search.

Send 2.000 USD to this Bitcoin address as soon as possible:

3NdFBXpkmETr1oAodfBzJzyBULg88tXQF9
(copy and paste)

1 BTC = 3,850 USD right now, so send exactly 0.524251 BTC
to the address provided above.

Do not try to cheat me!
As soon as you open this Email I will know you opened it.
I am tracking all actions on your device.

This Bitcoin address is linked to you only,
so I will know when you send the correct amount.
When you pay in full, I will remove both files and deactivate my program.

If you don't send the payment, I will send your masturbation video
to ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES from your contact lists I hacked.

Here are the payment details again:

Send 0.524251 BTC to this Bitcoin address:

3NdFBXpkmETr1oAodfBzJzyBULg88tXQF9

You саn visit police but nobody can help you. I know what I am doing.
I don't live in your country and I know how to stay anonymous.

Don't try to deceive me - I will know it immediately - my spy software is
recording all the websites you visit and all keys you press.
If you do - I will send this ugly recording to everyone you know,
including your family.

Don't cheat me! Don't forget the shame and if you ignore this message your
life will be ruined.

I am waiting for your Bitcoin payment.
You have 72 hours left.

Anonymous Hacker

Anyone else had one of these?

There must be a few men who panic a bit when getting an email like this!

However it just made me think, just how secure is the camera on a MacBook etc?
Im assuming it is actually possible for someone to hack into this, as well as the email account.....

hopefully its not a genuine blackmail attempt......
Especially as its my work email address!!

There's very easy ways to ensure it cannot be true hehe Main one is you can get simple sliding window devices which physically block your camera. Also you can disable the camera in device manager.

Obviously not enjoying yourself on teen websites too...

I've had similar emails,too.

Oddly the email appears to be sent from me, to me. The scammer then points this out as evidence that he has control of my computer.

Very common scam message. I also received this one this morning, and had similar about 3 months ago on a different e-mail account.

Delete & ignore.

If you fit the profile of the target, invest in covers for the cameras in your devices!

Oh yes, but my computer (it always seems to be to my work e mail) is in the middle of an open office, mainly ladies around me. The clincher is I don't have a web cam and, although I haven't tried, I think our firm blocks that kind of web access.

Sometimes they quote a password and last four digits of a phone number. I know these identifiers were on my old Linked in profile, which was hacked some years ago, and so do not exist now.

Check the website: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

This will give you details of e-mail accounts that are known to have been hacked at various times. Sometimes the scammer will even include your password for your e-mail account to prove that they've hacked you. Assuming that you've changed your password regularly, you'll find it's an old password from an e-mail account breach that happened some years ago. When a scammer sent this one to me it included a password that I hadn't used for over 7 years.

Unless I'm Skyping, my webcam has a Post It note over it permanently.

Given OP's username, the solution seems obvious.

Had one of these too.

I replied (from a junk email account) thanking them for getting in touch as I thoroughly enjoyed the teen website and had misplaced the url, and if they wouldn't mind sending me the masturbation video too as I would like to upload it to my fetlife account.

haven't had a reply yet....

Serious question to computer geeks. biggrin

Is there any way anyone can spy on you through the laptop camera, when you are not using Skype etc....?

I tape my camera hole up with black insulation tape anyway, just to be on the safe side.

Of course but the effort would far outweigh the reward. Think of all the hours of non-w*nking footage they'd have to endure. I mean,I guess they could put a hook on certain URLs to trigger a recording but nah, doing something like this en masse just isn't realistic. However, if someone really wanted to snoop on you (and specifically you) then it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

Yes "webcam hacking" can happen, ways to prevent it are having good virus protection software and sticking some tape over your camera as you've done.
