Jaguar XF S 3.0 sportbrake Portfolio

I recently sold the R32 as we needed more space. Loved the car but what with a little one and 2 week holidays to France this year, it would have been a struggle to get all the stuff in, including the mother in law to be! Enter purple Ron.
It's official name is 'Caviar' and likely to divide opinion but I think it looks great with the black pack. It's almost black in dark skies but a deep copper burgundy in the sun with flecks which make it pop. It's a 2 owner car, 32k miles on clock, previous owner was an undertaker from Bristol!! Comes with 2 year Jaguar warranty and European breakdown cover. I ended up paying about 3k more than I wanted but the high spec and comfort of the warranty swung ir for me.
It's got the dark leather, and being the S in portfolio spec, it comes with lots of goodies as standard like fantastic 825w meridian surround sound system, 18 way electric sports seats, rear camera etc. My car comes with additional blind spot monitor and black pack. I'm not usually one for picking black wheels but think they work well with the rest of the car.
I wasnt sure about going back to the devils fuel after 9 years of petrol and still a little concerned about all the tree hugging news and how this could impact on residuals, hopefully it wont depreciate too quickly.. I intend to keep it for 2-3 years. It has a 275bhp twin turbo 6 pot with 600NM or 443 lb ft so it gets down the road fairly well but is a big old hector to park and stop.
Im an estate man rather than SUVs. I looked at Audi A6 3.0 TDI, BMW 5 series touring 530d m sport and Mercedes E class and CLS shooting brake but found them to be a little too clinical and a little dull inside. Also think the XF styling is a step above.
Very different to drive coming from the R32, 4wd vs rear, acceleration similar but mid range in the Jaguar is way better as you'd expect.
More updates to follow once I've lived for it for a bit but so far very pleased.

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on with the Jag OP.
I may look to change my current Forester STi this year and would like another estate car...but I bit bigger. My maybe list is a bit like yours; XF Sportbrake, A6 Avant, 3 or 5-series, Merc C, E or CLS Shooting Brake etc. As 99.9% of these on the used market are diesel, I guess my next car might be a diesel (something I never thought would happen).
At the moment I’m thinking the CLS is at the top of my list, as it looks stunning. But the Jag isn’t far behind (especially if it looks like yours).
Did you test drive all your options? How did you feel the performance matched up against each other?

I think the 3 series and C class wont offer any more space, if at all than you already have so unless there is any other reason for considering, would focus on the others. I didn't drive the others but went to see an A6 and did a lot of comparisons on paper in detail. I focused on cars which were around 2014 and £16-20k with about 30-60k miles petrol and diesel and found you don't get as much equipment as standard on the others without paying for it. They all weigh about the same, have similar power, similar sized boots although the CLS shooting brake and Jag Sportbrake are a smidge smaller than others. Mercedes, Audi are leaders in class and tech when it comes to Interiors, but I didn't like the seats in the cls as they lack support. The E class is huge but bland styling and often used as airport taxis so market is flooded with them and residuals not brilliant. The germans were just a bit clinical and boring in the styling department. Safe choices if you like. I chose the sportbrake because it has style, prescence, practicality, comfort and is unique. I hate driving cars which everyone else has. The shape I have was only made for 2.5 years and they only made 1600 of them in Portfolio spec. They did a premium luxury spec which is ok and equivalent to an SE.
The 8 speed box is in the Jag is used in many applications, Land rover, BMW etc and is very good and reliable. It sits at 1750rpm in 8th at 80mph so very civilised! I've been getting 46mpg and not even really trying to get economy figures road tax is £200 per year which is nice coming from 570 in the R32 ! Mine is the S with 275bhp as opposed to normal 3.pd with 240bhp. The twin turbo in the Jag is the opposite to bmws as it has 1 large variable vein turbo which does the bulk of the work and a smaller fixed vein turbo which comes on after 3500rpm to top up any tail of in power, meaning you get a decent instant shove in the back lower down when you use it more.
Get out and have a nose around some but really recommend the Jag esp if you get a main dealer 2 year warranty. The jaguar in this shape is diesel only and has a self cleaning dpf so no good for continual short journies but the others all did petrols and 3.0tfsi in A6 is supposed to be good if you can find one as is 535i. I'd stick to 3.0 and above on this size of car as anything less is a bit asthmatic IMO.
Beautiful spec and the colour is amazing! I have a white facelift XFR on a 14 plate and I was surprised how good the interior was, I thought that the infotainment would let it down but have actually found it the easiest I have had in any car and it works perfectly especially with the meridian speakers.
Some interior photos for those that asked. The seats are extremely comfortable and able to be adjusted 18 ways and are heated and cooled for those sweaty summer days!! The sat nav and touchscreen display is not as large as some of its rivals and is often criticised for being slow. I've found it pretty intuitive to use and don't think it's that bad, also told the phone connectivity is crystal clear. The rising gear selector and rotating air vents are a nice touch, a bit gimmicky sure, but keeps keeps the lines inside the cabin clean.
The auto boot button combined with keyless entry is also proving useful when you have your hands full.

Next on the list is a good detail and I'd like to get some of the adjustable boot bars to stop things from flying around in the boot. They were allegedly an extra from the dealer but can be purchased from Rimmer Bros for about £150.
Very nice estate you have there...as you say it is a bit different from all the others and very rare ( especially up here in the North East !)
I know what you mean about VW/Audi models being a bit too 'boring' for want of a better word: I had an Alfa 156 JTDM that I put 100,000 miles on, and looked at Golfs/Audis etc to replace it, but a car to me must have that something 'extra'....hence my recent purchase of a mint Volvo C30 with the R design interior: The Volvo has some really nice touches that the German cars just do not have.
Its just a personal opinion...but I think that a different colour for the wheels on your Jag would help give the car more definition against the dark body colour...but that's just IMHO of course !
Ironically I am considering getting my alloys refurbished in black/anthracite to contrast the silver C30.

Well, it's been back to Jaguar twice in 3 weeks....first fault was I couldn't get into the car, called out the excellent jaguar assist who arrived quickly and diagnosed an intermittent fault with body control and access module. Software update and new door locking pin and problem touch wood has not reoccured.
Second fault was passenger mirror wouldn't unfold. New part ordered and fitted and I got a Jaguar XE 180 sport for a week and the boot bars thrown in for the inconvenience. Let's hope for some trouble free motoring from
now on.
Otherwise car has been fantastic, the mid range torque in 3rd to 6th is laugh out loud and it's so comfortable yet the dynamic button firms up suspension, steering and sharpens gearbox when you want it. The sound system is also crystal clear and very impressive. All n all a nice place to waft. Rear end needs respect in the wet though, my first rear drive car!

Another road trip completed to Provence, this time in the Jag for our holiday and wedding!. It's one of the reasons I bought the car. 2250 miles covered at an average of 46 mpg which meant a useful range of 550 + miles between fill ups. The car, fuel, luggage and passengers must of meant a weight of around 2.25 tonnes but the torque, power and rear air suspension meant you barely felt it
The air cooled seats helped keep us cool in 35c heat even if they do make you feel like you've wet yourself! The only snag was the main infotainment screen shat itself on 2 occaisions when left parked for a long time in direct sun and extreme heat. The screen basically flashed black and white rendering the sat nav, climate control, phone and music inoperable. Can only put it down to dodgy wiring but I'd be interested to hear from anyone else with the same JLR system who has experienced similar. They are not renowned for strong electrics generally but it was quite inconveneint. It's under warranty so will get it looked at but chances of replicating fault are slim.

I bought an 64 plate XF 3.0 R-Sport Sportbrake in 2015 (still have it). First trip a couple of weeks after getting it was to the Italian Alps. 50MPG was seen quite regularly on the relaxed trip down.
Far more comfortable than the 2010 XKR it replaced and half the fuel usage.
