Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a car from Evans Halshaw, the price is much better than anything I've seen from other dealers the only problem is the car is in Edinburgh (is unavailable for transfer apparently) and I'm in Swansea.

I can get a cheap flight up but trying to do all the research I can before I head up! Any advice or experiences with Evans Halshaw to pass on?

Thanks!

When we bought a car from our local branch we were not impressed at all, basically they lied to us and added stuff on we didn't ask for or need. Also just to make you aware there is an admin fee. I personally will never buy from them again.

Don’t they still move cars around the country for free?

Awful place. I used to work at Preston branch, they prep cars badly, generally don't care and will cut corners where they can.
More interesting in selling the add on products than the cars.

Just bought a 2014 Merc CLS from Evans Halshaw East Kilbride. I’m based in Bucks.

Got a Luton EasyJet flight to Glasgow (same price as train an much much quicker) then taxi to the garage.

The price was very good for the spec / year.

I’d say they were helpful but they will try to sell you everything from gap insurance to tyre blow out to some kind of interior protection etc etc, you could literally spend thousands on add ons. I was very clear I only wanted the warranty (£495 for 2 years), and nothing else and the sales guy was happy with that, no hard sell but they do insist you sit through the presentation.

The car wasn’t prepped very well, basic wash, no polish, alloys corroded, and front discs slightly scored but it still had the ‘Evans Halshaw Quality Assured’ sticker on it, so my opinion is this doesn’t count for much. I made the decision that even rectifying these issues, it was still worth me buying the vehicle.

Sales guy said it was part ex from a Merc garage they own down the road. I suspect it would have cost too much in prep for them to sell on.

They won’t negotiate on price but keep an eye out as they said that, then 2 days later they lowered the price by £700 which is what got me over the edge up buy it.

I drove the car back from East Kilbride to Bucks - took it very easy and no issues so far, but I haven’t done many miles apart from that trip.

It had FSH and I HPId it, it checked out

So in summary, I would buy a car from them again but be prepared that it may not be well prepped. Do your due diligence before you go as much as you can as it is a fair trek.

Hope it goes well for you

Due to PistonHead's no naming and shaming policy, I can't possibly comment.

They are almost as bad as Arnold Clark.

Link the car and we see if we can see anything that instantly doesn't look right.

It isn't often a dealer gets a car priced wrongly, so it is likely to be cheap for a reason.

I paid to have a car brought down from somewhere up north to Cardiff (my nearest centre) and when I went along to see it the thing was in an awful state, ripped leather, dents on the doors, scratches around the handles etc. All of this on a £20k bmw 335D that has clearly been cleverly photographed.
I politely declined to purchase and then spent 4 weeks trying to get a refund. I wouldn’t hesitate to say go somewhere else.

I went to Carshop in the end, and couldn’t recommend them highly enough, great service.

Bought a Civic from them a few years ago, was a decent experience. Told the sales guy from the outset that I was paying cash and didn't want any extras (apart from warranty). He accepted that and there wasn't any pressure from him. I found the tax disk in the glove box which hadn't been sent off for a refund so got that for free, plus they removed the admin fee.

I was looking for a particular car for Mrs S last summer and spotted one at an advantageous price at a local branch.
Patchy service history and a number of cosmetic issues meant that it was far from the bargain that it purported to be.
We were only glad we hadn't travelled very far to view it.

We bought our picanto from the Nottingham branch. Whilst they wouldn't negotiate on price, they would on my px. I found then very friendly. I have them the impression I was taking credit which have them more flexibly and then paid cash. (Strange, I'm sure you used to get better deals for cash...)

Filled the car up on the way home after collecting it, arrived home and noticed a smell of petrol! It was leaking onto my drive.

Evans halshaw collected the car, provided a courtesy car while it was being fixed, and then delivered it back with a full tank of fuel and a bunch of flowers.

I was more than happy with the car (which 2 years later has remained reliable), price and service.

Several weeks ago I went to a branch of Evans Halshaw to look at a used car which interested the wife and I.
When I asked if they could unlock it for me to inspect, I was told 'It's the same as the one in the showroom, inspect that one'.

I made my excuses and left.

I had a nightmare rejecting a car that was off the road for 5 of the 6 weeks my Mrs owned it with 3 separate issues.

Few years later I drove 20 miles to see a car that I'd earlier that morning called up about to check it was still there only to discover on arrival it had been sold a week earlier. They did give me £20 goodwill after complaining.

Never would I go near again.

And yet, despite all these negative comments, they are one of the largest dealers in the UK so must have many happy customers out there, or else they'd have gone out of business ages ago!

Their buyers don't seem to be very good at their job

Loads of EH branches around here and in the last few month we've looked at lots of cars across various branches.

In each and every case, the car we went to see was a nail.Filthy, beat up but the exterior faults ultimately dwarfed by the state of the interior.

The Carshop is EH spin off, but belongs in the council thread.

Lots of wasted journeys, with no mention of any of the immediately obvious faults when a telephone "walk around" was given.

They'll push the extras alot, ignore them. They will also do a terrible job of touching up scratches and chips.

Rejected a car earlier this year that was sold with a list of faults. Wouldn’t go near them again.
