There is also about 8 pages on this on the bible. It is one of those jobs that either goes well or doesn't.

Steve - I did this the other week and tried to follow your instructions. In relation to the grub screw on my n/s mirror, there was simply no way to get an allen key to it, modified or not. This is because it was situated at the top of the bracket - i.e. there was no space in the recess between the fitting and the door. If it had been situated at the bottom the gap is much wider and an allen key would have fitted. I seem to recall (although I don't have it to hand) that in your book you state the screw is located at the bottom. Is it simply the case that they machined the screw in my bracket in the wrong place?
In the end I got the things off by drifting it undone as you suggest. Not before first slipping and drifting straight through the paintwork, which even masking tape could not protect

The only method I could deploy was to uncrew the whole lot - each time breaking the tripod! On re-attachment the tripod had to be fixed to the boss prior to assembly on the car.
The best solution I found was to throw the bloody things away and fit the later VW mirrors:- a much more sensible fixing system.....

To Add some balance, I have done this when replacing a broken tripod and found it all pretty straightforward. Having disconnected the connector block behind the door speaker, I carefuly unwound the whole lot from the threaded hole in the doorskin, then once it was out far enough that I could see the little grubscrew, then I undid that to finish off the procedure.
Re-installation once I'd replaced the tripod was simply the reverse as I assembled the whole mirror (and did up the grubscrew) before winding the whole lot back into the threaded hole. The only bit of messing about was that I had to do a bit of trial and error in moving the collar around (by loosening and re-tightening the grub screw) to ensure that the whole mirror assembly "tightened" in the hole, with the mirror at the right angle on the car body.
I think I did a complete removal, tripode re-fit and mirror replacement in under an hour. (oh another minor point, keep an eye on the cable inside the doorskin as you're rotating the mirror as you dont want it twisting up on something)
Cheers,
Matt.
