Car was hit and runned which left some light damage to the rear bumper. Mazda 6 so the bumper is plastic.

So I thought I might as well have a go myself....youtube vids are very helpful but often contradictory.

Is this the process?

Sand damaged area right down. (What grit??)
Apply filler then sand the filler down (What grit??)
Apply paint (a few coats)....does this mean a primer then paint or can I just go to paint?
Apply clearcoat. Remove excess with some wet and dry (What grit??)

Done

Or is there more? Any advice appreciated.

Have you got a photo of the damage?

I can only go with how I did it, and I used 120 grit on the damage to take off the rough parts of the gouge in the bumper. Cleaned the area, applied plastic filler slightly proud of the bumper. Leave it to cure, then took 120 grit and rubbed it flat. I then took 800 grit with water and went over it.

I then sprayed plastic primer (has to be plastic primer, other primer can crack when it flexes). Flat that down with wet'n'dry 1200 grit. Applied a second coat of primer, flat that down. Spray your colour can over it, then flat that back with 1200 grit and apply lacquer.

Thanks for that, very helpful! No access to car at moment, damage is some deep(ish) scratches and a few holes (size of pea) that have created a little spider webbing around them. So I will just sand the whole area down and give it ago.

Thanks again.

Don’t sand the colour before applying laquer.

Correct and furthermore never flat filler with wet n dry.
Save wet sanding until AFTER you've primed

The lacquer calls for you to flat the colour before applying the lacquer.
