GT Black Series to get "new" V8 | Update

Boss Tobias Moers hints at the significance of incoming upgrades to AMG's circa 700hp model

If you thought an AMG GT Black Series that utilises active aero sounds extreme, try one that’s coming with a considerably upgraded twin-turbocharged V8. The ubiquitous 4.0-litre unit that powers AMG’s most potent model is being reengineered with a long list of unique components to create what division boss Tobias Moers has hinted will essentially be “new” engine – and one that’s definitely not hybrid.

That’s according to an interview with Wheels magazine, where he also all but confirmed speculation that the anticipated 700hp range-topper will use the extensive aerodynamic package fitted to a recently spied development car alongside a similarly upgraded chassis. It all serves to heighten expectation for AMG’s 2020 model, which will arrive in the latter stages of the GT’s production run as by far the most performance focussed variant yet.

That much was clear even before Moers’s latest comments, with sightings of a camouflaged test car at the ‘Ring showing just how far the aerodynamic package redesign will go. The development machine has been seen sporting a new and unique rear wing, held in place by arms that look to feature a pivoting system, as well as motorsport derived canards up front. It also looks to be sat closer to the ground than even the GT R pointing to the alterations that have occurred beneath.

Nobody could accuse the AMG GT of lacking presence. Even in standard format, the long snout, cab-rearward stance and curvaceous rump ensures it never goes unnoticed. That sense of occasion only increases as you progress through the range, culminating in the GT R and GT R Pro models, which brood with such menace it's best you don't look at them like that for too long.

Then we have whatever this GT is. It's been called a Black Series and it's been called an Evo, both names familiar from Mercedes' past, but we've never seen anything quite this imposing from Benz or AMG in their history. 'Race car for the road' is a hackneyed term, yet such is the seriousness of this car that it seems the only appropriate term. Don't forget, either, that this is presumably a more potent version of the Pro, a car capable of 7:04 at the Nurburgring...

Bits of this car are familiar, namely the wheels from the GT R, the grille, the doors, the paint, the wing mirrors... Otherwise it's transformed, bonnet scooped out with vents and intakes, a front splitter that looks straight from the GT3 car with double dive planes, vents and more flics on the front wings, plus the vertically stacked exhausts. Then, of course, there's that fixed rear wing, which only seems to differ from a GT3 car through its smaller endplates. It draws the eye on a race car, so looks suitably obscene when affixed to something ostensibly road-legal.

Given this level of aerodynamic work, the car could conceivably be powered by an A-Class diesel engine and set a reasonable lap time. But that wouldn't be the Black Series way (if indeed that's what this car is), the BS cars always being the most powerful AMGs. We know, too, that there is tuning headroom in the GT's 4.0-litre turbo V8, with the E63 already beyond 600hp. Plus the fact AMG has proved itself capable since 2013 and the first A45 of achieving very high specific outputs for its engine. 175hp per litre from the 4.0-litre engine would be a nice, round 700hp...

Of course nothing is known for certain just yet, though it's also clear AMG has some pretty serious ambitions for the GT. Could it be targeting the production car Nurburgring lap record, currently held by the Manthey Racing GT2 RS at 6:40?

That would be some scalp. There'd also be no better place to advertise the fact than next month's Frankfurt motor show, where the German manufacturers duke it out with ever more attention-grabbing cars. And you can't get much more attention-grabbing than an AMG beating a Porsche around the 'ring. Stay tuned...

I am a bit over this Mercedes bloodline now. With GTS, GT, GTR, GTR Pro and now this GTR Black Series and lets be honest they all look the same really! we want something new and bit more of a game changer car.

The next one will probably be electric. Having seen the GTRs/Pros going around the ring they're pretty damn impressive to watch

Yes, in very tiny numbers (less than 100).

Love to know in reality how many they actually did sell - I've never seen one anywhere, web/social media/print etc other than the luminous yellow press/factory car. You'd think that some Youtuber would have had one, at least on test or loan but to my knowledge I haven't seen any anywhere - I thought it was a great looking thing as well.

Wasn’t the range something like 100 miles? Don’t think the buyers would be using it daily, more of a history/art kind of car

Sorry, I must be missing something. Other than a pissing contest with Porsche on the Nürburgring, what is it exactly for?

For, erm, people to buy and enjoy, and for the manufacturer to, you know, make some money?

To get...?

Edit: clearly I'd responded while the original was being 'edited'.

Safety Car!

Bernd Mäylander has 20 colleagues who continually tease him for having a car that’s way too slow, so Mercedes are going to give him a faster one.

Funny, every time I see one, be it in the press or on the street, my interest is firmly re-ignited.
Hope they'll start showing their underdog status on the used market soon.
