With Hurricane Dorian looming towards Florida, anyone with any travel plans better check the weather reports.

We're here now, latest models (last 15 mins or so) show the center of the cone staying off shore. Were here for Matthew in 2016 and it is a very similar story, 24 hour news/weather channels hyping it up about it hitting Central Florida/Orlando for it to mainly stay off shore 24/48 hours before due.

That’s a bit of a misunderstanding about what the models/cones show. You are right, however, about the news overly hyping it up!

Same scaremongering, panic-inducing bullst every year. As soon as the weatherman takes his jacket off, loosens his tie and rolls his sleeves up, we know we're in for a heavy dose of it.

All of the predictions and forecasts are plain guesswork. This storm could landfall anywhere on the eastern seaboard from Miami to Cape Hatteras. A single degree of direction change now could make a prediction today incorrect by 500 miles.

All this scaremongering must be good for the economy, all the gas stations sold out here (and we are on the west coast!) supermarket shelves are bare and folks are literally fighting in the car parks to buy water!

Having been here for Hurricanes, I know full well that they aren't to be messed with, but the media whip the public into a frenzy and they all do what they are told.

People were even queuing at the local dock with boats to fill cans because everywhere else was dry, made it a right pita when all we wanted was to fill the boat and get on our way.

Also MCO declared they would shut the airport until further notice on Monday to all commercial traffic and I don't even recall anytime Dorian was forecast to go anywhere near Orlando?

Yup, OP here in coastal SC. Media frenzy is underway here, friend called me earlier saying how the petrol stations were full. I’m betting the schools close here for the rest of the week.
Fingers crossed anyway.

I was in south Florida when a hurricane hit in 2009, they had a mad panic 4 or 5 days before it was due, we ‘evacuated’ to Orlando were the weather was a bit st. The aftermath was that power lines were down and a few roofs were gone, not the end of the world like the authorities made out would happen.

I thought it was an exciting addition to the holiday, the wife didn’t though, we had a 3 month old at the time!

We were there (Orlando) when Irma hit a couple of years ago. Media was massively scaremongering and the reality was very different and curfews were not adhered to at all.

We had a villa in davenport but moved to the Hyatt on idrive for perceived safety and having more options than being without power/water in a villa. Again in reality this was totally unnecessary.

This was the first time in decades Disney closed their parks for 1 day due to weather and they didn’t actually need to.

Not the case, as of Saturday afternoon.

The original forecasts had it pretty well bang on Orlando.

Was reading reports on The Dibb yesterday of people who headed for Miami to catch flights and they said things seemed pretty normal there - no queues for gas and people out at malls and restaurants.

We flew out of Orlando 7pm Saturday local time with no problems, other than it being a bit of a crappy airport all round, there was only a 10 minute delay departing.

We were almost an hour on tarmac in Manchester though due to some issue in Europe.

Really? Are you referencing Orlando International (MCO) or Sanford (SFB)?

Hmmm. MCO is my home airport, I use it at least twice a week and am intrigued to learn what is overall a bit crappy about it. Care to enlighten me?

Well I've only used it twice, and obviously both times we're on our way home from absolutely fantastic holidays in an unbelievable place so maybe the mood isn't the greatest and I'm looking for issues that if you we're on your way to your holiday destination you might not even notice - but I think overall it's poor.

The announcements were far too fast and not particularly clear at the gate. The TSA was a bit of a nightmare due to lack if instructions about what was/wasn't allowed in your bag etc. but I accept that's probably the luck of the draw.

Both times we have been there there hasn't been anywhere near enough seating for the amount of passengers, people sat on the floor in the main area and by the gates. Everything appeared to be on time according to the departure boards so no real excuse, it should have enough seating to cater for all.

I don't think there is much variety in the shop(s), we could only find one main duty free shop and it didn't have much of a range. Often you get shops offering local bits and pieces, ideal for gifts. I also thought it was fairly expensive too but I suppose that's par for the course.

I take it you're experience is different?
