Hi all.

I'm in my 6th or 7th week of full time employment. My first in 30 years. I have been freelance or self employed virtually all my working life since the late 70s.

We work shifts, its an 8 day fortnight followed by a 4 day week then repeat, 10 hours a day.

The package says 25 days holiday a year plus the 8 days of bank holidays.

So my question as I can't get a straight one from work:

If I'm shifted to work a bank holiday, as I see I'm on Christmas Day, I should get that day off in lieu, am I correct?

Also, if I ask for that day off, if they can find cover, I should not lose any of my 25 days entitlement, again, am I correct?

Thanks for any help offered, ta.

You are asking for 1 of your 33 days holiday at Xmas so it will be a days paid holiday and you will have 32 left imo.
If you work it you will still have 33 not 34 if that’s what you are implying?

I think it depends on the job you're doing, and whether it is a job which is in operation on said Bank Holidays. If the business and your job are operational on Christmas and you come in to work, then you would be entitled to it as a day in lieu later on

I've worked shifts in the past at the airport, which is open 24/7/365.

In that job, the bank holidays were still working days, you were due in on that day if your shift was on that day. On the day, you would get double pay for working on a bank holiday. However, our holiday did not differentiate between bank holiday or regular time - we got 224 hours leave per year, which was the equivalent of 20 days plus 8 bank holidays.

I'm just trying to work out your specific roster pattern, how many hours per week are you scheduled, because 33 days leave is a nice scheme certainly.

I guess it is.

It's an 8 day fortnight followed by a Tues to Fri 4 day week. 10 hour days currently 0930 to 1930.

Not sure how the leave will work now we are on shift as holiday is based on a 8 hour day.
