Sliding field/5 bar gates..
Discussion
I have a wide, but fairly shallow driveway. We would like to fit a gate for security purposes and to keep animals in/out but are limited to a sliding variety due to the shape. I had a quote a while ago for a cedar clad automated gate but they were coming in around £15k which is more than I want to spend. Going for a cheaper option, I am considering a field/5 bar gate.
Would something like this need to be custom made? or can one simply take a standard gate and adapt it? I am wondering if it's possible to add a track//wheel system and have something usable without spending a fortune. Automated would be good but not essential. FWIW the span is 14ft.

Anything is possible.
The cost is generally not the gate itself but getting the automation 100% reliable and factoring in callouts and profit.
If you DIY or don't automate it's quite cheap
Timber gates are a pain as they warp etc - alloy or steel is better
Most Councils won't let you put a gate up unless you can get a car off the road - ie you don't block the road waiting for the gate - have you got the room ?

Thanks, yes no issue about blocking a road as the drive is on a private lane. We already have planning permission for it. Agree about the automation, I wouldn't attempt that myself as would want it safe and reliable if we go down that road. I guess I am wondering how simple it is to install the gate myself and potentially have it automated after. The cost is generally not the gate itself but getting the automation 100% reliable and factoring in callouts and profit.

£15K sounds very strong for a single simple gate, might be worth a few more quotes?
However a word of caution, if you do it yourself then please be very careful with the control mechanism. There are quite a lot of bye laws and the like with regard to anti crush mechanisms. The liability for any accident, However freak, lies very firmly with the installer. It’s worth paying the professionals just to absolve you from these responsibilities. IMHO of course.

I agree, wouldn't try automation myself for those very reasons. The other quote we had was about £11-12k for a slightly lesser spec. These quotes included digging a channel for the runner etc. I think I'll try a few other companies for the 5 bar gate rather than cedar clad solid construction and see how they compare. However a word of caution, if you do it yourself then please be very careful with the control mechanism.
