I've got a job interview on Wednesday for a customer adviser job. The job description makes it look like I'll demonstrating a product to customers and then taking their details to pass on to the sales team.

However, I've been told not to wear a suit to the interview because "we're not that kind of company."

Any ideas what I should wear?

Thanks!

In my industry I tend to opt for shoes, smart chinos or jeans, shirt open at the collar and a suit jacket.

Do some research? Do they have a website? A Facebook? How do their staff dress?

If not, shirt and chinos. You can always lose a tie, roll sleeves, tear your chinos off and dance in your pants. Adapt, overcome...

What do the customer advisers wear on duty?

If they wear a polo top I’d probably wear one to the interview along with smart jeans. Failing that a nice jumper, smart jeans and shoes.

Thanks!

From what I've seen online employees seem to wear a branded t shirt, polo shirt or hoody.

The interview's in a local hotel as the company's looking to open a premises in my area.

I'm thinking of going for a smart shirt, black jeans and dressy shoes.

Trousers, polo and smart jumper should do it, along with some shoes.

Sounds like you want to be rocking slacks and polo shirt, aka the Mars Bar gear

Wear a suit, but leave the jacket and tie at home

I think that would be fine.

It all depends on the company. Are they judging you by your dress code, or are they looking for you to fit their culture?

In all too many places, it's the same thing...

Make it look like your preparing for the future by wearing a Hazmat suit.

I've been told this before, and I went in shoe/boots (black, not jobsite type boots) chinos and a polo shirt, fully done up. Got the job, and ended up wearing jeans and a t shirt every day whilst working there.

Sounds like you need the European IT consultant look. Smart jeans, shoes (can be black or tan but make sure the belt matches) smart shirt (but not double cuff) and a blazer. Preferably grey herringbone.

Something doesn't sound right. It either a very new startup with limited funds (couldn't they rent a space at Regus or WeWork?), in which case look for phrases like 'mucking in' or 'hitting the ground running' as 'part of a growing team' biggrin

Many years ago, one up and coming IT firm interviewed me at McDonalds in Liverpool Street train station, followed by an interview at University College Hospital (a couple of seats in A&E)... I turned it down.

A suit is standard, even if I was facing a disciplinary I'd dress smart. Chino's and casual wear is for when you've got the job.

You could go 'full Council' and wear a tracksuit getmecoat

A tracksuit’s still a suit right?

The 2 interviewers were also dressed in smart shirts with decent jeans so I fit in well.

It’s not a startup, but a multinational company looking to open a site in Belfast.

Think things went well, I’ll let you know.
