Thought I would give PH another try after my hiatus.

Early last year (2019), I was on the lookout for the right V10 M6 to replace the 650i I had. Plenty of examples for sale, but nothing really grabbed me, until JamesB's car came up for sale at a very attractive price and very low miles (26,000).

For those who don't know, here is James thread on the car:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
Reading James experience with this car was a major selling point for me.

The spec wasn't quite what I originally set out to buy, but would rather compromise on the spec than a well maintained example.
Black Shapphire paint
Black M Sport Merino Leather
Heads Up Display (HUD)
Upgraded CIC Navigation, including digital TV, USB & Bluetooth audio
19" M6 Wheels
Logic 7 Sound
Adaptive headlights
Alcantara Headliner
Carbon Fibre Roof

Some pictures as bought:

Those who know my other projects know I am never happy with a 'factory' car, I try and personalise them with OEM + upgrades where possible. Over the last year, it has gone a external transformation to a 2009 LCI with Competition Pack.
Off the top of my head:
-LCI Bootlid & new brake light
-LCI Rear Tailights
-LCI Front indicators
-Competion Wheels (9j front and 10j rears) - polished faces
-Contour Competition Bonnet
-Wheel stud conversion
-Backbox delete with bigger, oval tips
-Painted calipers
-Gloss black grille
-1/2 car repainted to remove stone chips & small dents
-H&R lowering springs

As of this afternoon:

Interior is mostly unchanged - for now!

Even did a little taster of Oulton Park last year, which taught me a lot, but good fun!

Thats pretty much it for now, but plenty planned for the year.

Absolutely love these, they weren't deemed pretty back when they were out but they just look mean and purposeful.

I was very very close to buying one 4-5 years ago. I still recall Top Gear comparing this against an Aston and 911, must have stuck with me!

That V10 is an excellent engine, I did a couple of trackdays in my E60 M5 with no issues other than a set of tyres and had the discs skimmed after. Ran mine for 4 years, great fun and wasn’t unreliable either.

Love it ! I was recently looking at M6’s, then bottled it and ended up with a 630i instead laugh. These really are a cracking car and have aged superbly. Just yesterday I was polishing mine, neighbour came out and said ‘oohhh nice new car ?’ He wouldn’t have it when I said nope, it was a 2006 with 57k on.

Yours looks pristine, look forward to the updatescool

Looking great Alec, congratulations.

Love how you discreetly upgrade your cars, nothing too brash.

Very tasteful upgrade. Bought one new in 2006 and had it for five years. Amazing engine.

Alec,

I'm delighted to see you back on here and equally as pleased that we have remained in touch over this car. As i was saying on text the other day, i think the car is a credit to you. You don't appear to sell your cars often but should you ever decide to part with it then i'd love a call!

All the best,

James

sounds lovely

have you thought about replacing the front grill with a pair of cast iron gates to give it the modern BMW look?

Yaay - welcome back Alec! Good to see you’re continuing your OEM++ methodology - looks great. Still got the Jag too?

Your car looks fantastic Alec. thumbup

I liked the 6 Series when it came out, but as time goes by I'm liking them even more!

Just out of curiosity, how do you find the H & R springs? I recently bought a Z4MC with H & R coil-overs and they are really crashy on the pot-holed roads that seem to be everywhere in the UK these days.

I also need to find an M6 owner for whom the letters "KYT" have some meaning as my car came with that plate!

Your 650 was awesome, your skills and attention to detail on an M will be amazing!

Still got the XJ?

Looks great: I love everything you've done to it apart from the black grille, but I never seem to be able to get on with them on any car for some reason.

There's an E60 M5 (which I believe has the same drivetrain?) for sale with 30k miles at 12K near a site I visit every few months. It's been for sale for ages and I suspect he'd take a fair bit less, particularly in the current climate, but running one where I live would be hugely difficult so I've managed to control myself so far.

Keep us updated with how you get on with it: if you get a couple of trouble free years out of it I might be tempted to be brave myself tongue out

Thanks for the nice words chaps.

Re H&R springs, they are coming off, to be replaced with Eibachs- as I can't get on with the way the car settles over bumps

Yes, still got the XJ as my daily, for now. It was reviewed by Jayemm on cars last year btw:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIhJPPYGoTw

A 30k mile M5 for 12k is a stupid bargain- that is extremely cheap.

Regarding the Black grilles, I know they are not generally liked on PH, but they make the car in my eyes.
