The long running Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has just announced the latest addition will feature a female centric cast starring Margot Robbie as its lead role and using the skills of Christina Hodson for the screenplay.
The film will be unrelated to the previous Pirates films, with an original story and entirely new cast and characters meaning Johnny Depp won't be involved in this one.

This movie is to be separate to the previously announced Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott reboot.

(Was trying to think of a Marrrrrggot Robbie pun but couldn't figure out a way to delicately crowbar it into the text)

In an infinite multiverse all things are possible, though not exactly likely.

Wonder who'll get the blame when it bombs?

For sure.

By why not start its own franchise and crack on 'being good' rather than stomping a boot of PC on an enjoyable series of films massively based around the character (which will be removed).

In other news. Voiceovers in the Simpsons are to be changed, because.

Not everything with a female lead and director has to suck

Not everything with a male lead and director is brilliant

Next you will be trying to claim that having female pirates is historically inaccurate smile

Because the Disney infrastructure is all there for Pirates for merchandise, the rides at the parks etc.

Some of those movies are pretty ropey (at worlds end was the worst I think), but they usually have some fun and creative ideas.

The franchise is ripe for some life being injected back into it.

Oh, is that what they did to Ghostbusters?

I see no reason it couldn’t work, the series has had some pretty strong female characters in previous episodes - captain jack sparrow has grown tedious so it Cooper be the change that’s need.

Ghostbusters was a terrible film, but that film was going to be terrible whoever they cast - it was a terrible cash grab from the outset.

All bar the first Pirates (and maybe the second if you squint) films are garbage. A complete reboot with a new storyline could work but, and it’s a big but, the writing has to be spot on. Margot Robbie is an excellent actor but if she’s given garbage to work with then it will go down the Ghostbusters road into obscurity and derision (a film I have yet to see to its end due to its awfulness).

Agreed.

No reason this couldn't work.

GB bombed because they just tried to remake the original with an all-female cast. Taking on a different story arc within the same movie-verse would have made a world of difference.

As an experiment I read the usernames first and tried to guess who thought this would be a good idea.

I was right. hehe
