Driving across chevrons?
Discussion

I've just checked on google earth and the chevrons are edged with broken lines, so no offence I hope. Although they have recently redone the road markings around there so maybe they are now solid, got to admit I was not really looking!
As long as you do not endanger others or flagrantly mis-use them, then to me they are a bit of squeeze space. They are basically there as a bit of ‘run-off’ area, just don’t abuse or over-rely on them.Pica-Pica said:

What a load of b
ks, Chicken Dinner had the right answer in the second post.Highway code...
Rule 130
Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right.
If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.
If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency.
I dare say if a solid white line, then it's 3 points and £100 fine.

Yep, never seen a biker get stopped for this and never was either going over chevron after chevron on my commute for years, often passing cop cars to boot.Rule 130

They were with broken white lines of course.
I suppose to be fair a bike doing this does not look as messy or potentially dangerous as a car, I would be wary of using them if the police were around while in a car.
I have been doing this manoeuvre for as long as I can remember, together with many other drivers. I've never given it a second thought.
What's concerning me is the white van at the top of the slip road and the 'devices' on tripods pointing down to the main road and also pointing at the traffic joining the slip road. Not sure if they where cameras or just devices monitoring the traffic flow. They where black boxes with three round 'lenses' at the front.
Obviously I saw them but had totally forgotten about them by the time I had crawled to the bottom of the slip road and nipped out to lane two.

Coming out of Manchester, A5103, South bound. Could make GDP in a day with a camera here with the amount of people that use it as a third lane.

Perhaps an indication that they are superfluous if everything carries on working despite everyone not following the chevrons?Coming out of Manchester, A5103, South bound. Could make GDP in a day with a camera here with the amount of people that use it as a third lane.

ks. I'm not going to explain the obvious, you can do your own research, however If you'd like more details you could read the highway code (the bit quoted above by another poster.)jondude said:

He was filmed by an unmarked police car that followed him for several miles.

This is the bit that could be used if necessary to enforce a fine.Rule 130

Is it really necessary to enter just to merge later in a queue or overtake a vehicle?
Or to get to your destination 30 seconds quicker.
I overtake over chevrons bordered by broken white line which are in the centre of an local A road maybe once a week.
Is it necessary? No, is it safe? Yes.
