Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake | Spotted

Because an RS6 isn't the only way, you know

A few years after sales ended and with innumerable Mercedes launched in that time, it can be easy to forget what a good idea the C218 CLS Shooting Brake was. Or rather, how it seems with the benefit of hindsight - especially the AMG version. Because obviously it was fast and capacious and well put together, but it was also stunning to look at, really beautifully appointed and special in a way that an E-Class wasn't quite. Which you'd kind of want, given the premium a CLS commanded.

But the Shooting Brake was doomed to struggle. First problem being that the AMG was, of course, also offered in the regular four-door coupe variant, the cheaper and more popular bodystyle - remember the Shooting Brake only lasted one CLS generation. Moreover the car was mechanically very similar E63 AMG estate, which was pretty damn good at the time and many thousands of pounds cheaper. Oh sure, the CLS felt a cut above, but rather like the Maybach S-Classes it was sometimes hard to see the point. For a certain kind of (very wealthy) customer - the one requiring great space, speed and luxury - the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake was manna from heaven. But unsurprisingly, there weren't too many of them around, and so the CLS63 doesn't exist anymore. The entire Shooting Brake range doesn't, in fact. Maybe not such a great idea...

Still, let's all celebrate the fact that Mercedes had the guts to go ahead with the SB in the first place, because it looks a very tempting prospect secondhand. The premium it once would have carried over an E-Class has been wiped out by depreciation: this 2013 CLS with 58,000 miles is £25k; this 2014 E-Class with 72,000 miles is £1,500 more. Which makes the buying decision a bit more of a thinker this time around.

Because although a maximum cargo volume of 1,550 litres is some way off the E-Classes, and the boot aperture will be narrower, that's still a lot of space. And those that regularly need to move that much stuff probably shouldn't consider a 550hp V8 Mercedes. For 95 per cent of scenarios, the CLS is going to be big enough, and for 100 per cent of the time it's going to feel that bit nicer than an E-Class. And with the premium now eradicated, that's a nice thought.

This particular CLS is especially appealing. Perhaps black with black is a little unimaginative, though it's also unlikely to offend, either. Far more importantly, this is a 63 AMG Edition 1, which boosted the standard output to 557hp and 590lb ft. The advert doesn't make clear whether the optional limited-slip diff has been fitted (a somewhat scandalous £2,570 option at the time), so it would be well worth having one fitted if it currently isn't. That sort of torque really requires something more than an open diff.

Otherwise it looks bob on, with two owners, a full service history and seemingly not a mark on it. For a car that once cost more than £80,000 basic (and probably in excess of £90k with the options) you'd surely feel petty smug about paying £25,000 for it eight years later. Because, yes, an E63 will do much the same thing with even more space and, yes, an RS6 has the traction advantage, but neither of those is going to make you feel quite as good running errands, visiting the in-laws or trundling to a conference. It's exactly why Mercedes charged a premium in the first place. Now, for the same price as an E-Class, it'd seem rude not to finally get onboard with the idea.

These do represent good value for money, and you're unlikely to see another one on the road.

Always thought these cars were so cool in a style over function sort of way.

Interior though let them down a bit.

Interior is so dated and the back end looks like it's melted

I think it’s a ‘13 (from the plate and some of the description) rather than a ‘17, but what a stload of car for the money, and way less likely to be seen than a ‘boggo’ E63 wagon.

Doug DeMuro found one of these recently, even if he couldn’t quite explain how it ended up in the US in the first place, having never been sold there.

Quite lovely cars.

A lot of car/performance for the money for sure. I personally prefer the CLS to the Shooting Brake looks wise though. Agree regarding the interior, and it does make it look a much older car than it actually is I reckon.

I think for 25-30k an M6 grancoupe makes an all round more attractive option, same recipe, turbo V8, RWD, auto, however M6 looks better resolved inside and outside, in my humble opinion!!

Incredibly comfortable and fast cruiser, and practical. Had 2x internal doors inside mine. Built like a bank value too, before everything MB started becoming hollow and surface deep. Excellent seats.

The black interior and cf does it no favours- porcelain was a much better choice. The post-facelift 's' is where I'd put my money and sometimes I am tempted to!

Such a gorgeous car, either in saloon or estate form. The interior does seem 'very' colour sensitive though, as mentioned it looks very dated in black compared to how elegant the rest of the car is. Dark blue or a red with the porcelain interior would be the move for me.

Even with the potential for serious bills, they do seem such a lot of car for your money.

Ive had my 2011 CLS63 AMG Saloon for 2 years now and apart from the tyres, brakes and fuel costs, the only thing to go wrong was an o2 sensor.

Great cars, ridiculous power and very rare.

Dated, compared to what ? An A class with more screens ?

Melted, its called styling and its a taste thing.

Always find myself looking at these as they are in budget and appealing having had the first CLS, just sort of an answer to a question I am no longer asking really, lovely though they are, don't really need to go that fast and have no need for a huge mile muncher as I dont do huge miles, and if I was doing huge miles I probably wouldn't want the fuel cost.

That's a lovely thing. The M157 engine is an absolute monster, especially running that level of torque. I much prefer it to the 4.4 in the BMW M5/M6. I also think the 7-MCT is a nicer day-to-day gearbox than the M-sport DCT too.

When these things hit their stride at about 2.8k - 3k rpm they are bonkers quick and make a glorious noise.

Yep it is a matter of taste and I too think it’s awful, fine until you get to the b pillars and from there back it looks like a rather sad banana was used as the styling cue.
Quite why anyone would want one over the W class equivalent or an RS6 is beyond me. But then, most things are...

They're not as rare as an R63 AMG, and they have the 6.2l V8...

That said, I think I'd prefer this red one...

This "S" is pretty epic, but would need the wheels sorting...

The advert says:

"Selling only as I need a car that can tow going forwards".

His new car might take a bit of finding.

Chris Harris was a big fan back when this was new:

I have to say these do look very tempting at 25k.. a new octavia vrs wagon is 30k+ and only has 240 bhp.

I think that's not a bad looking thing to waft around in. My only thought is that if you need a big boot you might as well go for the E63 as I did and not lose all that headroom in the boot. If I didn't need to transport 3 kids and all the gubbins that goes with it I'd have a C63 or something else a bit smaller.

Always liked these. The £4K cherry wood boot floor option always stood out. Maybe not the most practical (or great value) estate boot floor but an unusual and nice touch nonetheless.
