Taking a much needed trip to cornwall in late May
I used to take the A303, but in recent years have opted for the M4/M5 alterantive.
However, this year we're taking a dog so resigning ourselves to a much longer (albeit more chilled) trip.

Any great pubs or retaurants on route to grab an early dinner?
We'll have kids and a cocker in tow.

Toast - Honiton is our usual stop off.

This is a little gem too, for coffee and cake

Somerset preferable.

My wife and I have been travelling from Mid Surrey to West Cornwall to see family for the past 40 years or so, always using the A303. We do this twice a year out of season, although we are doing the trip mid May this year.

There are relatively few places to stop on the A303. There used to be a number of Little Chefs but these are all gone and have been mostly replaced by Starbucks (ugh!) which we avoid at all costs.

There is, for us, an ideally located pub called The Flintlock Inn in the village of Marsh which is just in Devon over the border from Somerset. We have stopped for lunch there many times. However, you need you know that it is usually not open Mondays, and in the current times it seems to be open weekends only, so you need to check. We hope to be there when we are making the return journey from West Cornwall in May.

There is also a pub called The Royal Oak in the village of Over Stratton in Somerset which is a mile or two off the A303. We have not used but we are hoping to give it a try when we travel to West Cornwall in May. I have not contacted them yet to find out their opening times.

It'll be interesting to see what other PHers come up with: I suspect there are many that make this trip and have the same issue finding good pit stops.

I`ve stayed here https://the-brewersarms.com/ a number of times. Lovely old pub with a nice restaurant and garden. I`m sure they are dog friendly.
South Petherton is two minutes off the A303 near Ilminster.

That's good to know. I'll add it to the list of possible pit stops.

That looks a nice place but its location is not so good for us: too near to Mid Surrey or too far from West Cornwall for us to use, I think.

We stopped at the loosely US themed Route303 which is situated not long before the 303 joins the A30.
But that is a family trend from when It used to be called the Newcutt Grill and was more of a Little Chef clone.

I just looked on trip advisor and some of the complaints since Covid don't seem to favourable, but its been fine for up to three car loads of of family and friends in the past.

If you’ve got to use services, Carterton nr Yeovil are pretty good, indie and you can get a real meal there as opposed to the usual burger joints.

The location is good for us. and we've often thought about stopping there, but were never sure. It's on the wrong side of the A303 when travelling home so could be a struggle to get back on the road as it's single carriageway and usually very busy in that vicinity.

But it's a long way off the A303 that the OP is using!

Not the A303, but Topsham is a minor detour from the M5 near Exeter and has some pubs on quay/river. Can be a nice chilled out stop off point to stretch the legs without going far out the way.

Not an exact answer to your question, but with a dog and kids in tow I would stop at the National Trust at Stourhead (near Mere) if the timing is right.

Although I’ve never seen the world famous landscaped garden or Palladian house, I have parked for a picnic in the large overflow car park bordering farm land and paths on countless occasions and stretched the legs on those paths. It’s very pleasant.

There’s a cafe, used to be a coffee kiosk and clean toilets. The actual house and gardens look magnificent too ...

Quite often stop at Barrington Court (again NT) depending on how we’re going. Coffee and toilets and a bit of a run about for kids.

Interested in ideas from others experienced on this route.

Probably not far enough West, but this is quite good for a light lunch / coffee, not too far from the A303

Or a little bit further off the A303, quite a good cafe, and some arty stuff to browse.

Been past many times, never stopped, including when under previous past ownership. Usually looks very busy at lunch times. Probably good for brunch type food.
