So I'm replacing the skirting boards on my house but would like to leave the carpet.
The current super cheap skirting has been set on top of the carpet, which seems kinda wrong, should they not be placed on the wood floor and carpet butt upto it? then with the skirting board sealed to the floor for airtightness?

Or is it correct to float the skirting board on top of it?

What happens if you change to a thicker or thinner carpet?

I was wondering this, as we will probably need to plaster then paint our bedrooms.....you'd want your skirting fitted before you paint, but surely you wouldn't want the carpet down when you paint?

In the house we bought 2 years ago the previous owner had skirtings on top of carpets which he subsequently replaced with laminate flooring in one room. We now have a 10mm gap between the floor and bottom of the skirting.
Must get around to fixing that but what a pain

Ah ok, so I'm right in saying skirting on, paint everything, THEN fit carpet?

Seen quite a few with the skirts over the carpet. Quite common from my days of lifting floors and carpets in England.

Yes mate, i would say so. We are doing the same at the moment. New door frames, architrave, skirting & carpets upstairs. And new wood floor, frames, architrave and skirting downstairs.

Always skirting first - it's part of house-building. Carpet fitting comes afterwards.

Some friends of mine have a 'skirting board' that's actually a strip of carpet! So that's another option for you nuts

Depends if you paint your skirting.

Where I’ve redecorates rooms from bare, I paint before skirting so you get a nice finish.

Pet hate is brush marks at edges and then roller finish on open spaces.

Roller it all, or brush it all.
