Chevrolet Corvette (Z06) | Spotted

A new Z06 is a matter of weeks away, so how about a C6 for £35,000?

There's some understandable excitement around the new Corvette Z06, which will be revealed to the world on 26th October. Not only is it the first mid-engined Z06, but it's also getting a flat-plane crank V8 never seen in a Corvette; add that to the favourable impression already made by the standard C8 and the promise of tangible motorsport influence, and it's easy to get why anticipation is at fever pitch. Especially if it comes to the UK...

Let's not forget, however, that the Corvette Z06 has come to Europe before. Yes, it was in left-hand drive, and yes, it was in tiny numbers, but a few of the C6-era Z06s were allocated to Europe. This one has been here since new 15 years ago.

Even by the standards of souped-up Corvettes, the C6 Z06 was something special. It used the largest Chevy small block ever made, the 7,011cc LS7 V8, which made 512hp and 470lb ft. It was dry-sumped to ensure it sat low in the body (and was better suited to track driving), and also featured titanium alloy con-rods to help it spin all the way to 7,000rpm. Yet the Z06 was the lightest Corvette of its generation, too, at just 1,400kg, thanks largely to the use of aluminium in place of steel for the chassis. Combined with firmer suspension, bigger brakes, and wider tyres, the Z06 was a real weapon of a Corvette.

Crucially, however, it wasn't as wild as the supercharged ZR1 that eventually followed; for those who wanted to drive on roads other than drag strips, the supposedly inferior Z06 was more rewarding. Same for the most recent C7 Corvette, too, where the ZR1 was really more engine than the car could handle. The American sports cars are not where you would expect 'less is more' to apply, but that's been the case for the past two Corvettes.

For those who can accept sitting on the left of the car, this Z06 seems to offer a heck of a lot. Because besides all that it offered as a new package (which only looks more attractive a decade and a half later), this one looks like a very nicely presented used car. The paint and wheels are unblemished, the interior looks decent, and the MOT history is flawless - it's passed every single one first time all the way back to 2008, never picking up more than a few thousand miles a year. There's been one advisory in 20,000 miles and 13 years of testing, which was for worn tyres in 2017. This is a Corvette, after all...

And while here at PH we love to get behind the British brands, hopefully the appeal of a 7.0-litre, manual Corvette this good for the price of a hot hatch shouldn't be too hard to explain. If the new Z06 does come to the UK in right-hand drive, it promises to be an awe-inspiring supercar. But this one looks to be a pretty memorable experience in itself - and for an awful lot less money.

Yeeehaaa! Was very close to buying one of these, except road tax in Belgium is based on engine size and this would have been (3500 euro annual) crippling- did the LS7 not suffer from valve guide problems?

Had one of these from new for over 10 years. One of the very best engines out there. Very compact, and loves to rev. Not what you’d expect from a 7 litre pushrod unit. Also incredibly reliable and inexpensive to service. Plus sounds fantastic !

Always loved these, 7l V8 in a decently light body with a manual box. Iirc there were some problems with valve guides and the cylinder heads, but i'm not sure if it was over exaggerated and that big of an issue. Interior didn't looked too fancy either, but it's a sportscar anyway smile
Nonetheless, still one of my "attainable" dream cars

For £35k, it looks like one to consider. I'd check the history, and if sound, definitely a characterful alternative to the usual suspects.

Why!? Just change your name to Ed Cheeseburger Jr The Third and buy some cowboy boots. This will no doubt be bought by someone to park next to their Harley (with patent leather panniers) and a "Let's Make America Great Again" flag. Utter nonsense. Shame on you.

I owned this car back in 2012, and subsequently sold it to another PH'er.

I regretted selling it the moment he drove away. So much so that I bought another. Which I then sold a year or so ago. And have regretted since.

Now wait for the usual 'it's only a pushrod N/A; how pre-historic is that?', the 'but it's got leaf springs therefore must be crap' and 'the interior plastics feel cheap' comments.

I'd buy another like a shot, if my back and knees would let me get into it. biggrin

-NA 7 litre V8
-Over 500 hp
-Manual gearbox
-Still looks great (to my eyes at least)

I'd argue the case you'd have to be insane to NOT see this as a great car to own and put a smile on your face.

This car has a long PH history as I was owner -2 and I bought it off a PHer.

Brilliant car and possibly the only one I really regret selling out of all the metal I have had.

Plus removable roof, so essentially a hardtop and open top motoring.

Great looking and great proportions. I think I would enjoy one of these far more than an equivalent priced porsche.

Plus the sound, and memories of the racing ones going around Le Mans - motoring nirvana!

I can't quite recall where I bought it; pretty sure it was from a guy trading from home, somewhere on the outskirts of west London.

The roof is not removable on the C6 Z06 you need to upgrade to the C7 Z06 to get that feature.

This is good value, prices of all C6 models have risen in the States over the last year or two, making the UK models well priced (IMO). If I had the money I would. smile

.

Were the culprits the push rod engine and leaf springs? ;-)

Whilst I am not Corvette fan, I do have a soft spot for this generstion of ZO6.
