MSA National B License
Discussion
Hi
I have finally taken the decision to get into Motorsport next year and so need to get my MSA National B license.
I'm keen to get it early next year and have been looking at different venues. One I have my eye on is Goodwood. Mithril Racing have an ARDS course for £195 (now £225) and including a lesson for £295 (now £325).
Does anyone have any experience of Mithril and did they take the lesson for a further £100?
ALSO, can anyone recommend any other good venues/locations (in the South) to gain the MSA license?
Thanks in advance

Hi, have you tried Thruxton?

I took my test at Goodwood about 5 years ago, but with a differant company, a great circuit to take your test at, as a nice easy flowing track. I think that if you have done a number of track days you will not need to take the lesson, approx. 50% of the people on my test day failed, mainly due to lack of track experiance

Sorry, US spell check has been teaching me bad things...
Thank you for pointing that out - I trust you are making your way through the rest of the forum pointing out typos and spelling mistakes

I did my license last year at Truxton and it was very good. the on-track car was a MG ZS180 which wasn't all that bad for FWD, but the guy who was my passenger on track in the test was a plank and picked me up for everything......but he has gone now
The track is also easy to learn as it is all quick corners apart from chicane
Good Luck!!

My Dad did his at Thruxton last year (in an Alfa) and said he'd wished he'd done the lesson beforehand as he felt a bit rusty and the track time would have been helpful but it had been twenty years since he'd been on track.
Hoping to do mine this winter so I'll watch this thread with interest!

Did mine at Silverstone - they bang on about how hard it is to pass there but we all passed on my very wet day.
£305 with Circuit Driver discount for a full day including skidpan, ARDS instruction, caterham slalom, and finally ARDS written test and driving assessment. I only chose there as it was the only place still running them that late in the year, but compared to some of the prices I've seen for 10 mins ARDS @£200+ it was decent VFM.

My experience for what's it's worth -
In terms of venues in the south, I chose Thruxton. I did my National B there in May this year. It was £225 - I was sort of expecting a full day out for that sort of money, but once they'd got my credit card details they said turn up at 2.30pm. Ok I thought, all I actually want is the licence.
Pottered around for a while after turning up watching various people doing there "Drive a Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc" Ian Taylor experiences. Nice cars to see in all honesty.
Basic briefing about the track layout (which I'd never been to before). Out for approx 4 laps with my instructor/examiner driving the Rover saloon. Then I did about 6 laps, gradually increasing speed, but most importantly making sure not to spin, and to be aware of faster traffic approaching behind. Show a basic aptitude of how to drive a car on a track, don't make any stupid mistakes, and don't be tempted to show off, bery few will have a problem getting a thumbs up.
After that an exam. 100% understanding of all safety flags required, and common sense questions on other saftey / racing matters where you don't have to score 100% but can maybe get 2 out of 10 questions wrong.
Job done!
Mithril at Goodwood have a good reputation, so I would quite happily go with them. I just decided Thruxton because it was convenient for me.

I did mine at Silverstone as part of their 5 day race intensive course. The price seems to have gone up a fair bit, when I did it I got a reduced Winter price. You get lots of practice, skid/skid recovery training and by the end of the course you should be more or less on the pace at your first meeting and a lot less likely to trash your car.

I also obtained my licence as part of the Silverstone 5 day course.
They do lead you to believe it's going to be tough, which doesn't do much for pre-test nerves. I was a bit of a nervous wreck by the end of the test, which kind of reminded me of my driving test when I was 17! I passed all the same.
Most of the instructors were good blokes and really helpful, but there were the odd few who were a bit full of their own ego and seemed intent on ripping into your every mistake.

Did mine at mallory park. Its pretty easy there. You do the written test, and then they pretty much let you go round until their happy with you. If they're not, you just do a few more laps until your up to speed.
Really nice guys there as well.

Me too... I was the only person in my "group" spent ages on the track just because the instructor couldnt face getting back into a car with any of the numpties that were there on "experience days" he was a funny guy...
was going to do mine at mallory but will be doing it on saturday at 3 sisters, going out in the car first for some one to one, then do my ards. The rocking ham ards looked very close to the season start; but I want it out of the way so I know how much time I have to finish the car.
