Got a Boxster, like to join local club, which is best for my p&j.
I'm not a hairdresser and have had a couple of TVR and a carrera inthe past but the Box suits my present needs. So the question is the offical club or the independant?

PCGB. Active in your area and you are near the HQ
Hi
I am a PCGB moderator...to declare my interest first....
There are advantages to BOTH clubs...
PCGB.....Join and get 10% of all parts bought from OPCs....
Trackdays expensive....
TIPEC....Much more sociable...and friendly in some respects...
The honest answer is to ask around LOCALLY....areas vary...some will have one club MUCH better than other...etc...but if your car has any problems ...that parts discount WILL pay for itself fast...
All the best Brett

Spose i'm looking for a good social scene and activty not just standing in the car park(wife none to keen)
What about PH meets? You can probably find something local, and I enjoy the variety of cars and variety of events. Check out the local and events forums.
Some of the people are ok too.

Or by all accounts just tell the parts dept guy that you're a club member and reap the rewards. They don't really care if you're in PCGB or not.....

Hi
Not quite as easy as that I am afraid...The OPC will know all the local cars and owners who are PCGB members as most Opcs attend PCGB meetings...they CAN ask for your membership card...
Pcgb membership is £54 ...easy to get that back on parts....plus you get a very fancy glossy mag once a month...
All the best Brett

Hi
For what its worth....most Pcgb meetings are held in nice pubs or hotels etc....Only time I have stood in a car park was at a Tipec meet.....but nice people
All the best Brett

Which costs less:-
1) 10% off OPC parts with PCGB.
2) 10% off Independent parts with TIPEC.
I would have thought that as independents charge less for parts than OPC's then your quids in going down that route.
Insurance companies also give discounts for being in TIPEC eg Norton/Heritage.
I have also saved 4 or 5 times the TIPEC sub through various discounts.

Umm, not unbiased here as I'm TiPEC RO for South East London & North Kent.
Reasons why I joined TiPEC & not PCGB.
Membership fee considerably lower for TiPEC over PCGB significant at the time!
Friendlier towards the earlier water pump cars, PCGB is perceived as being biased towards the more modern Pork.
Affordable social scene! A comment I hear a lot, PCGB events tend to be top class & a bit "gilded" hence lots of dosh.
Not convinced I wanted to be in a club with links to the factory as it dilutes it, certainly controls have been seen at things like the Porsche Festival.
Yup we meet in a pub, sometimes in the car park if the weather is nice, but we do have a room as well.
We're in our first year & have done 6 or seven events this year looking towards doubling it next year & appointed an ARO.
Go see your local area for both and make a decision!

Hi
Sorry it doesnt work like that for older cars....my 928 as an example.....there are certain parts that HAVE to come either from OPC or America if I can wait....NO independants have them......they only stock the common/high profit/fast moving parts....so it depends on the AGE of your car really....
To get back to original question......the honest answer is to try BOTH in your area...you dont have to join either to attend a couple of meetings.....and areas do vary.... a lot
All the best Brett

TIPEC for the laid back, friendly club where you can have a good laugh with fellow members down the pub and attend organised regional events that wont cost you the price of a good holiday!
Some TiPEC regions ok as run by genuine enthusiasts.
TiPEC as a whole is having problems.
I'm an RO for PCGB (Scotland South) and I would say that the club is extremely sociable and most of the comments levelled against the club above are entirely not my experience. We have a very active social scene which includes everyone from the £1000 924 driver to folks taking delivery of the first 997TT and GT3s in the country. We meet in the pub, have a great mix of people and many people have made great lifelong friends through the club. It costs the same as a single tankfull of fuel to join, so can't really be called expensive. As for the myth of "expensive" trips - yes the club does offer these, but at a local level the regions offer a wide array of events to suit all budgets and tastes from local drives and fun nights which only cost your time through weekends away throughout the UK to weeks away to drive Spa and the Nurburgring - all organised by local members to suit the tastes and budgets of those involved (everything from sleeping on a couch to 5* hotels). I would say go to a couple of meetings before writing off either club - it will vary by region and in my opinion its all about the people you meet and less about the cost/discounts/event costs etc.

What organisation doesn't have problems from time to time?
For a voluntary run organisation to have been going since 1994 its done remarkably well and is a great achievement, especially when Porsche's own solicitors tried to shut the club down around the late '90's and failed!
