How to adjust Spax front-shocks? Tasmin 280i
Discussion
hi. recognized that the former owner fitted spax-shocks (oil, not gas) at front.
does anybody know how to adjust them. i mean there is a small screw and a spax engineer demonstrated it in a classic car magazin on a fiat124. he said if the car is front-engined and has a weight around 1000kg you should start with 10 clicks on the adjusting screw.
anybody has expierience how much it needs on a tvr? (for road-use).
the next thing is, when i return the adjusting-screw to 0, i dont know when to start counting the "clicks" as at the beginning there isnt any click.
is there also an end? i mean i´ve heard about 30 clicks, but i can turn mine endless.
also the access to this srew is very hard in a tvr...anybody has an advice or uses a special tool? thanx!!

The technique usually recommended for setting dampers is to set the adjuster to the fully hard position (usually clockwise on the adjuster until it stops) and then back them off by a number of turns or clicks. Some dampers have an end stop at the 'fully soft' position but some don't, and the ones that do aren't always consistent from damper to damper. The 'fully hard' setting is usually consistet though.
found this on spax webpage (doestn help me much):
What should the damper adjustment be for my car?
We recommend that everyone sets their damper adjusters to the 1st click to start. This is our softest setting and should be close to what the original dampers were like when fitted to your car when new. From here you can adjust them to suit your driving style. Remember that you should adjust all four dampers the same amount and that you can adjust them stiffer or softer on the car to suit the conditions.
How do I adjust my rear telescopic dampers?
There is a knob or a screwdriver adjustment at the bottom of each damper. If you turn the adjuster fully anticlockwise it will be on the lowest setting, then turn the adjuster clockwise - On our newer dampers there will be 28 points of adjustment and on our older dampers 14. You need to count the clicks, as once the maximum damping has been reached, the adjuster will keep turning. Always adjust both dampers an equal number of clicks.

...and the lower fixing bolts arent made for that....
I found that there is only a small range of settings out of the 25-30 or so that are ok for road use so you should only have to do it a couple of times. I think I set mine on about 7. As for the studs, you should be able to remove and refit as many times as you like. They come under a great deal more tensile loading going over bumps than the recommended torque of 12-15 ftlbs is ever going to affect them.
